Reformation in Responsibility, by Rit Varriale

Undoubtedly, happiness is an essential part of life and it should be pursued, but not at the expense of fulfilling our responsibilities to God and to our society. Countless people have demonstrated that ignoring one’s responsibilities and pursuing happiness at all costs ends in failure and disappointment. We, the people of the United States, have done this as a nation. We have taken the positive concept of individualism to such an extreme that we have created a culture marked by irresponsible individualism, that is, we are quick to make God and society responsible for the happiness of the individual, but we are reluctant to make the individual responsible to God and society. This is the reason we are frustrated and failing as a nation. Part of our problem is that we arrogantly reject common sense and traditional values, but solving our crisis is not as simple as going back to what we were at any given time in our past. It makes little sense to try and return to what we were. What we were got us where we are. Indeed, it was only a matter of time before our irresponsible emphasis on individual rights and happiness would manifest itself through social and political dysfunction. That time has come.

We need a new direction. To find that new direction, we have to be humble enough to admit that we have failed to fulfill our responsibilities to our families, our society, our environment, and our God. Thus, the only thing that will change our nation is the willingness of our people to assume those responsibilities once again. Change will not come through a particular political party or religious denomination. Change will not come through the empty words of political leaders and presidents. It will not come through the voting procedures of a new Congress. Change will only come through the actions of the people. We, the people of the United States, need to change. The only question is: “Are we willing to change?” We have become so irresponsible and self-absorbed that the changes necessary to turn our nation around will not come easily. Yet, as hard as those changes may be, they are easier than the hardships that will follow if we refuse to change. Change is what this book is all about.

This book is designed to foster reflection and discussion both of which are essential for change. The tone of this work is conversational not academic. Hence, there are no footnotes or bibliographies. This book is divided into four chapters with five essays in each chapter. After reading a chapter, you should visit the companion website, RinR.org, for a more interactive experience. With respect to the book’s format, the reader is encouraged to go through one essay each day of the work week. Each day you read an essay, share your reflections about the essay with others. Finally, it serves no purpose to discuss problems without presenting possible solutions. For that reason, the last essay will present a series of concepts and challenges that have the potential to bring about positive and lasting change, but that change will not come without a reformation in the hearts and minds of the people of the United States that leads to a Reformation in Responsibility.

Challenging our civic philosophy
By bdavis
Much in the way that Thomas Paine and other journalists of his day challenged the people of our land to throw off the shackles of tyranny, Varriale boldly challenges the civic philosophy of modern America. He calls into question the philosophy that purports that the adolescent desires of the individual are allowed to trample upon the desires of the majority. Historically, the rugged individualism pervading our culture has shaped American philosophy in many positive ways, but Varriale challenges the reader to consider the negative impact of such a philosophy on the culture at large, but most pointedly on the culture of the church as both cultures are in shambles. But Varriale is convinced that a "reformation" is possible. The author has nailed his theses to the door of both the church and the culture at large; let us see if either respond with the changes that can restore America as a true leader among the nations of the world.

It is time to speak up
By m.wells
I found this book to be a truly engaging and insightful read. It addresses so many of the issues plaguing our nation right now, especially those troubling to most Christians. For too long the Church has given up rights in the name of tolerance, and now we are in a position where we have to speak up or have our voices stamped out permanently. It is always so refreshing to find someone willing to take a stand on these issues. I have read it through once and plan to start again immediately, reading one essay a day and going to the website to read the extra materials presented there. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has traditional Christian values and wants to know how to stop the downward spiral of watching them slip away in our nation.

Varriale Says Exacltly What Needed to be Said!
By Drew
Varriale has nailed his 77 Thesis to the door of the American culture! Also, in the form of early American documents such as the Federalist Papers and Paine's Common Sense, an indictment upon American philosophy has been issued. In this timely work, Varriale has called America on the carpet concerning many of the nation's leading issues. In a time where irresponsible individualism reigns and Christianity is shoved in the closet, Varriale's words ring out with the truth that America needs to hear. Undoubtedly, many will be offended and outright enraged by this work. However, similar reactions were had by those who opposed the Protestant Reformation, and the American Revolution. Varriale poses, rightly in my opinion I would add, that at the heart of all American issues is the fact that Americans have perverted the "pursuit of happiness." This perversion has led to his idea of irresponsible individualism, and that this in turn, has led to a bullying of the majority by the minority. In Essay 15, he states that irresponsible individualism has led to "a person [having] the ability to rewrite the rules and [expecting] the larger group or society to make necessary accommodations." In the midst of their "pursuit of happiness" Americans have allowed all other goals and ideals to fall by the wayside, most prominent among these are the Christian ideals and belief that the nation was founded upon. Varriale prescribes a rejection of the irresponsibility of our nation, and a return to a responsibility to God, others (beginning with family), and finally a pursuit happiness. In that order, a Reformation in Responsibility can be achieved, as well as a reformation in America. This is but a small sample of the issues and conflicts dealt with in this work. It is well worth the read, and invaluable in the truths presented.
