My Name Is Love: The Darlene Love Story, by Darlene Love

Finally, the woman whose voice the New York Times said "is as embedded in the history of rock 'n' roll as Eric Clapton's guitar and Bob Dylan's lyrics" tells her story. Right out of high school, Darlene Love began singing lead vocals for legendary producer Phil Spector, cutting such classic hits as the number one -- He's a Rebel," "Da Doo Ron Ron," and "He's Sure the Boy I Love." As part of girl group the Blossoms, she held a regular spot on television's Shindig, and with Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans she toured the country.

Later, she sang backup -- and collected numerous scintillating back-stage stories -- with, among others, Dionne Warwick, the Mamas and the Papas, and Sonny and Cher. Now in My Name A Love, Darlene is ready to tell her tales about Elvis coming on to her backstage during his famous '68 Comeback Special,"about wild parties she witnessed at Tom Jones's house, and about her love affair with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers. She also recalls how she found herself cleaning houses in Beverly Hills, heard herself on the radio, and vowed to make a comeback. That comeback has included roles in all three Lethal Weapon movies (with the fourth now in production), starring roles on Broadway, and headlining concert appearances worldwide.

My Name Is Love is a dishy, behind-the-scenes showbiz memoir that is also the inspiring story of a woman who refused to give up.

From Publishers Weekly
After singing lead vocal on the number one single "He's a Rebel," in 1962 (recorded under the name the Crystals), 21-year-old Love hoped that her producer, Phil Spector, would nurse her talent into stardom. Unfortunately for Love, Spector believed vocals were just one more cog in his musical Wall of Sound. Although she sang classics like "Today I Met the Boy I'm Going to Marry" and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," by 1964 Love was well on her way to becoming "the most overqualified backup singer in the business." Hers is a sassy tale of a revered industry survivor who has watched contemporaries such as Tina, Aretha and Cher score comebacks while she sings backup for them. After 30 lucrative years literally singing in the background, she hoped for a revival of her own. Considered a relic in her 40s, she had to resort to cleaning houses to pay the rent. Cruise-ship gigs and a couple of failed musicals (Leader of the Pack and Carrie) brought her attention but no recording contract. While a comeback still eludes the singer, her story has a happy ending: in 1997, a New York jury awarded her $263,000 in back royalties from Spector. Years of touring with Dionne Warwick ("always a patsy for the tea-leaf readers of the world") and Tom Jones ("the conveyor belt [of women] to his room) offer her a cavalcade of stars to dissect, dote on or skewer in illuminating, entertaining portraits. Her sardonic observations border on the hilarious. Love is not afraid to speak her mind, and co-author Rob Hoerburger has polished those anecdotes to perfection. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
The autobiography of a star who went from cutting hits like "Da Doo Ron Ron" and singing backup for the stars to cleaning houses in Beverly Hills?and then back again to concerts, Broadway, and roles in all three Lethal Weapon movies.

From Booklist
Love figures in rock music history largely because of her association with record producer Phil Spector. She was supposedly the Crystals' lead singer, but Spector made his groups sound interchangeable, an effect he heightened by mixing their personnel. Although the Crystals were credited with the girl group anthem "Da Doo Ron Ron," La La Brooks (not Ronnie Spector, as some have said) sang the lead on it (Spector stripped Love off the record!). Confusing? You bet, especially considering that Love was a Blue Jean (of Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans) and a backup singer for the Righteous Brothers, too. Having a late if not last word, Love delivers devastating insights and anecdotes about Spector, Sonny and Cher, and dozens of others. It is difficult to evaluate Love's career, for "a good many of [her] records didn't have her name on them," but as a gesture toward that evaluation, an extensive, though admittedly "far from comprehensive" discography is included. And this fine look at a multidimensional star is wonderfully informative, with a scintillating soupcon of salaciousness, anyway. Mike Tribby

Love Ms. Love's Book
By Francie Nolan
Man, what a cool person Ms. Love is. There are many things I enjoyed about this book and her story. One thing I loved is that she didn't get involved with drugs and alcohol! That's rife in rock 'n roll memoirs. I actually can't think of one off the top of my head that didn't have at least a chapter of the celebrity's life given over to a life of dissipation. (I'm no saint. I had many chapters of dissipation! So I love when people don't fall that way.) I also loved that she didn't run around. She was true blue. And she always spoke her mind to Phil Spector or whoever. Love, love, love that.

She cracked me up describing the dancing skills of Mick Jagger and...I can't remember now, maybe Freddy and the Dreamers. I remember watching that guy on Ed Sullivan doing just as she said, flapping his arms like a disabled ostrich. Too funny.

A lot of scoops about so many musicians and singers and rock stars in this book, so that's fun, too.

She is so talented. I totally understood her sometimes feeling like Tony Bennett singing back-up to Frank Sinatra. She was as good if not almost always better than the singers she backed-up, so it was good to see she had such faith in God because certainly God knew the challenges he sent her would give her the opportunity to evolve her soul. Although I was sorry to read she felt if she'd had more faith, a certain tragedy would not have happened early in her marriage. I don't believe in a cruel God. An incomprehensible one, yes, but not cruel. But I respect her feelings on this matter.

And this woman has such a way with words! I don't have my Kindle with me to quote her, but early on in the book she's describing a room in a mansion as having "good posture" and I thought, Oh my gosh, how perfect. She does these kind of original takes throughout the book that I totally loved.

I loved her description of Dionne Warwick's music as boarding-school soul. So perfect. That's it!!

The only reason I don't give this five stars is because I got bored with the family details. I love that she loves her family, but I really just wanted to read about Ms. Love and her career and not so much about her kids and family. Some yes, but not as much as there was. But let me add that some people will love that view into her life. It's just me I'm talking about.

Wonderful Story
By Richard A. Root
At the start, why didn't I give it 5-stars? Because this book is an update of an autobiography that ends in the mid-1990's, and is fantastic up until that point. Since then, Ms. Love was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has continued to enjoy a great comeback. This information is included in a very brief "update" chapter.

Except for that, I would give this book a 5-star rating. I was enthralled with her story from the start to the finish. She gives both a fascinating story of coming from an extremely religious family to life as a backup-singer whose songs are known around the world. I am a former disc jockey in an oldies club, and was well aware of Ms. Love's contributions to many of these songs. However, I was stunned by many of the songs that she'd sung backup on that I never knew of her contributions. For example, The Monster Mash. If you love the music of the late 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's this is a great book for you. I'd also encourage you to read The Wrecking Crew, another great book of the instrumental artists that Ms. Love worked with behind the scenes of the great hits of this era.

INCOMPLETE LOVE
By art aratin
Let me start with this: I LOVE DARLENE LOVE. She has been a favorite singer of mine since she started recording. I was thrilled to see her on the Oscar telecast and I loved 20 FEET FROM STARDOM. I liked MY NAME IS LOVE, but could only give it four stars instead of five. It was well-written, but it was incomplete. Missing was a musical adaptation (called a "popera") of William Shakespeare's OTHELLO at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre. Jerry Lee Lewis was the headliner as Iago with Gloria Jones as his wife, Bianca. Darlene Love was not only Jones' understudy and standby, but also had her own part in the show with the Blossoms. This was a major theatrical event in Los Angeles and should not have gone unmentioned. Then there was a movie, MADE TO ORDER, that was taken from Love's life story. It was only a subplot, but there was a maid played by Merry Clayton, who had been a hit singer early on. And gets rediscovered by one of the other maids and gets her back into singing. Merry Clayton's singing was the best part of the movie. Important enough items that should have been mentioned in the book.
