Professor Mines traces the role of the weaver-merchants in the organization, of south Indian states and society from the medieval period to the present, and shows that at times in their history they rivalled the status and power of the agriculturalists. He also demonstrates that, far from being provincial, the weavers have for centuries maintained supralocal organizations to administer their affairs and represent their interests. As the political economy has changed, so they have modified their organizations and created new ones better to fit changing conditions and interests.

Mattison Mines is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of the "The Warrior Merchants: Textiles, Trade, and Territory in South India" (1984).

Amazing... it's more than a book - A great document and treasury for the Sengunthar Mudaliar - a community in Tamilnadu State India, whose main profession is Handloom weaving ( weavers - handloom weaving artisans)..

Mattison Mines had extensively traveled Mudliar community living places like Kanjeepuram, Erode, Salem, Chennimalai, Thiruchengode, personally interviewed Mudaliars of all walks of life and witnessed the customs and life style of the community - comprehensively reported the significance of veterans of Mudaliar community, their service to the community through the handloom Industry and co-operative movement. Great !
