This book was well researched and gave good insight. Most of the solutions are thoughtful and workable, if our politicians would listen instead of trying to make make points in a partisan way. I wish I had seen a recommendation to teach SNAP recipients to grow at least some of their food to lessen their dependence on handouts and self-esteem.

Laying the Groundwork for Productive Conversation

A non-sensationalized look at the effects of welfare on the poor. The book doesn't aim to be political but it does lay out a solid groundwork of facts that can be used as the basis for productive conversation. By layering in the human stories, it acknowledges much of what we already know intuitively: the system, while providing a base level of comfort to those in need, is still fundamentally broken when it comes to helping people to lead more dignified, self-sufficient lives.
