Cosmic Pessimism (Univocal), by Eugene Thacker

“We’re doomed.” So begins the work of the philosopher whose unabashed and aphoristic indictments of the human condition have been cropping up recently in popular culture. Today we find ourselves in an increasingly inhospitable world that is, at the same time, starkly indifferent to our species-specific hopes, desires, and disappointments. In the Anthropocene, pessimism is felt everywhere but rarely given its proper place. Though pessimism may be, as Eugene Thacker says, the lowest form of philosophy, it may also contain an enigma central to understanding the horizon of the human. Written in a series of fragments, aphorisms, and prose poems, Thacker’s Cosmic Pessimism explores the varieties of pessimism and its often-conflicted relation to philosophy. “Crying, laughing, sleeping—what other responses are adequate to a life that is so indifferent?”

A Petite Package of Pessimism
By Chauncey
Somebody needs to leave a review of this book, even if it means breaking the pessimism that zero reviews implies.

This is quite a short book—it just took me about an hour and a half to read through it at a leisurely pace. The text structure is as if Mr. Thacker compiled notes of pessimism he jotted down while he rode the train to work. Instead of providing an exegesis on fundamental pessimism, this book(let?) contains the musings of a pessimist. If you're looking for mind-numbing philosophical profundity, this may not be the book for you. If, however, you're a pessimist interested in the perspective of another pessimist, buy this book.

So K
By George Smith
If you've read Nicolas Chamfort and/or Arthur Schopenhauer and/or Giacomo Leopardi and/or E. M. Cioran, this little book will be just like chewing a gum ball of pessimism until the flavor runs outs. I'd call the content Pessimism Light.

The author's writing here is often poetical, as if he were Anais Nin trying to evoke H. P. Lovecraft's imagery of graves and gloom. Lyrical and overtly eloquent, the writing lacks the gravitas and austerity of more deep-seated, experienced pessimists, and almost none of the author's own epigrams or aphorisms work or ring true. Still, it serves well as an easy introduction to the serious subject of pessimism with a capital P.

Many other authors, besides those mentioned in the first sentence of this review, are mentioned or discussed to one degree or another in this tiny book, and that feature makes for another positive aspect of the book. The author admits to being a bibliomaniac, which is just fine with me. As a consequence, the author gave me another (minor) author of pessimism to read and enjoy: Edgar Saltus. The reason other more famous pessimists do not extol yet other pessimists in their own writings may be due to the fact that these men are not bibliomaniacs, just bibliophiles.

If you have some acquaintance with Nietzsche and his appreciation of Schopenhauer, then Eugene Thacker's little work, particularly towards the last few pages, will peak your interest.

This work, as a whole, offers nothing earth-shaking or ground-breaking (and he got Schopenhauer's death all wrong. Schopenhauer did not die in his sleep, as the author said. He was sitting upright on the sofa fully dressed when he died). But only Schopenhauer, Leopardi, and Cioran are capable of such mind-bending feats.

Review

From the reviews:

‘This is a brilliant, bold, and fascinating book. It is a work of stunning originality, combining traditional policy analysis with sociology, history, and philosophy to create a rich, textured account of the interactions between energy, culture, and technology. At a period of growing consumption and constrained energy supply in the United States, especially important are chapters assessing the remaining potential, reliability, and profuse benefits of energy efficiency practices and programs. It is a work that should be read by anybody even remotely concerned about energy, the environment, or the future of American society.’

(Art Rosenfeld, Commissioner, California Energy Commission and recipient of the 2006 Enrico Fermi Award)

‘While the diffuse energy challenges facing the country have never been so great, this book sheds important insight into how many of them might be managed and resolved. The myths debunked in this volume continue to complicate energy policy decisions and confound analysts, consumers, and politicians. This work is a must-read for anyone interested in American energy policy.’

(Kateri Callahan, President, Alliance to Save Energy)

‘For too long, U.S. energy policy has been directed by a series of canards so often repeated that they pass for common knowledge. By collecting the best minds to debunk the greatest of these myths, Sovacool and Brown have brought us a step closer to finding a national energy policy based on common sense.’

(Chris Cooper, Executive Director, Network for New Energy Choices)

‘Any thoughtful observer of U.S. energy production and consumption patterns might readily conclude that current energy policy has been driven more by myth and assumption than by even-handed assessment. As we work and build for the future - indeed, if we take seriously our responsibility to the future - our deliberations about smart energy policy must follow from a conscious and informed dialogue. Sovacool and Brown provide a bold and imaginative way forward.’

(John A. "Skip" Laitner, Visiting Fellow and Senior Economist, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy)

"Considering how crucial solving our energy dilemmas will be to the nation’s future well-being, it would seem troubling how little consensus there is on basic elements in our energy policy. Benjamin K. Sovacool and Marilyn A. Brown take a step to address this matter with Energy and American Society: Thirteen Myths, new from Springer, in which the editors reach out to a broad range of policy experts to explode some of these misconceptions … . it tackles topics on a variety of issues." (The Electricity Journal, Vol. 20 (5), 2007)

"This book offers a valuable debunking of the various controversies surrounding energy policy … . The individual essay authors are experts from various energy-related disciplines and have picked 13 myths to discuss. … Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels." (J. C. Comer, Choice, Vol. 45 (1), 2007)

"The contributing authors, prominent scholars and practitioners succeed in varying degrees in exposing the myths and replacing them with the truths. The effect is rewarding to both technical and non-technical audiences since the book is written in plain English and is easily digested by anyone with a rudimentary background or interest in energy economics." (Fereidoon P. Sioshansi, Energy Policy, Vol. 35 (12), 2007)

"Benjamin K. Sovacool and Marilyn A. Brown, using a similar pedagogic device, have developed a list of thirteen of their own myths … . My wish is that this fine book would be more available to and more appealing to a wider audience. Its messages are too important … . The material on the Thirteen Myths deserves … a wide audience, an audience that is out there, interested, motivated, and―armed with the information in this book―capable of driving change." (Martin J. Pasqualetti, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Vol. 98 (2), 2008)

"Marilyn Brown and Benjamin Sovacool have done an excellent job of assembling a group of very qualified coauthors to produce this anthology of essays on energy and society in America. … For those wanting to explore the depths of energy illiteracy in America with definitive, detailed, and well-documented analysis, this book is a must read. From my own perspective, I really appreciate the range and depth of the topics covered along with the high quality of the writing." (Jeff Tester, Technology and Culture, Vol. 50, April, 2009)

From the Back Cover

Current events related to energy policy – skyrocketing gasoline prices, the 2003 Northeast Blackout, the Kyoto Protocol’s enactment, passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and the influence of recent Gulf Coast hurricanes on energy supplies and prices – demand innovative approaches towards conceptualizing the relationship between energy and American society.

This book takes on a central quandary in the study of energy and environmental policy: What myths continue to exist in American culture concerning energy, the environment, and society? It enrolls twenty-four of the nation’s top experts working on energy policy in industry, government laboratories, utilities, nonprofit organizations, and universities to debunk and contextualize thirteen energy myths relating to electric power, renewable energy, energy efficiency, transportation, and climate change.

While the book focuses on the American experience, it will be of interest to those working in the fields of energy policy, energy and the environment, and technology assessment worldwide.

A readable, excellent resource
By John R Mashey
This is an excellent introduction to real energy issues, written by experts, with many useful references for further study. Energy mythinformation (inadvertent or otherwise) propagates all too easily, and this book does a good job of debunking the common myths.

Anyone involved in policies regarding energy&climate change should be familiar with this material, and that includes ordinary citizens, especially those who might care about the US economy and environment seen by any grandchildren.

I'd summarize the book as saying:
a) We face serious problems, as we *will* run out cheap oil, and then cheap gas [look up "Peak Oil" in Wikipedia], and if we keep burning coal without sequestering CO2, we will push the planet into a much hotter state with serious economic downsides. Right now, the US economy depends on cheap oil, and of course, it might be better not to be selling off big chunks of the US economy to other countries to feed our oil habit forever.

b) However, we actually have pretty good solutions for many of the problems, mostly without requiring magic technology leaps. There is no one silver bullet, but a myriad of small actions to be taken to stop wasting energy, many of which actually save money right away.

c) Most of the actions required are actually policy choices, with help from widespread use of existing technologies, plus rational R&D investments. Low electicity-per-capita use in some states has been achieved with no obvious economic catastrophes. [Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and California are not usually considered poor places.] Of course, we have much further to go, but in many cases, it really is a matter of choosing to do the right things.

The editors provide an introduction and summary bookending 13 myth discussions by (mostly) other authors. Following is a list of the 13 myths, with comments on a few of the chapters:

1. Today's Energy Crisis is "Hype"

2. The Public is Well Informed About Energy

3. High Land Requirements and an Unfavorable Energy Balance Preclude Biomass Ethanol from Playing a Large Role in Providing Energy Services
- This is an especially important chapter, as the topic engenders much confusion. Not all biofuels need be from corn, and there is more land available than many think.

4. The Hydrogen Economy is A Panacea
- Dr. Joseph Romm shows why hydrogen (especially for vehicles) is a long way off, if ever, compared to PHEV/FF (plug-in-electric-vehicles with flex-fuels). He shows why research is appropriate, but not spending huge $$ for premature deployment, especially to the detriment of truly useful steps doable much sooner.

I also his recommend Joe's website [...] and his book Hell and High Water: Global Warming--the Solution and the Politics--and What We Should Do.

5. Price Signals are Insufficient to Induce Efficient Energy Investments

6. The Barriers to New and Innovative Energy Technologies are Primarily Technical:
- The Case for Distributed Generation
- In many ways, distributed generation of electricity would be more efficient, but power companies are geared for centralized generation, even with expensive long-distance distribution.

7. Renewable Energy Systems Could Never meet Growing Electricity Demand in America

8. Worldwide Power Systems are Economically and Environmentally Optimal
- Tom Casten and Robert Ayres show how far off we are, illustrating the efficiencies gotten with waste-energy recycling / cogeneration ... that are strongly inhibited by regulatory issues and market distortions, compared with places like Denmark or The Netherlands, etc. See Casten's website: [...]

9. Energy Efficiency Improvements have Already Reached Their Potential
- Amory Lovins shows why not, why "negawatts" are really cost-effective, and why nuclear plants don't seem very cost-effective compared to other options. I especially liked his description of his Rocky Mountain house that lacks a conventional heating system, but whose design cuts heat losses to within 1% of various free heat gains. "The last 1% can come from a 50-watt dog, adjustable to 100W by throwing a ball..."

10. Energy Efficiency Measures are Unreliable, Unpredictable, and Unenforceable

11. Energy R&D Investment Takes Decades to Reach the Market

12. Climate Policy will Bankrupt the US Economy
- California is pretty aggressive on this, because we have to be, as all the impacts of global warming will cost us money. Nevertheless, California is hardly poor, and we expect that reworking our infrastructure for energy efficiency, and heading towards minimal use of fossil fuels as early as we can, will only make us more competitive in the face of increasing oil costs.

13. Developing Countries are Not Doing Their Part in Responding to Concerns about Climate Change

=====
This is a very useful book. I expect to study many chapters in further depth and chase down references.

This book will teach you something about energy
By J. Fernandez
I should state that I had the benefit of being a student in Professor Brown's class where we utilized this book.

That being said, many of the "myths" in this book are misconceptions that perhaps most of society today falls victim to. The book presents evidence from leading scholars in the fields of energy technology, public policy and economics which shed some much needed light on these topics and shows how interwoven they really are.

If you have an interest in where this country and the rest of world is heading in terms of energy reform, and what obstacles (both technological and political) lay in their paths, then this is an excellent book for you.

Comparative Politics in Transition (New Horizons in Comparative Politics), by John McCormick

COMPARATIVE POLITICS IN TRANSITION combines a thematic framework with a country by country approach to provide a truly thoughtful and effective introduction to Comparative Politics, one that assumes very little prior knowledge on the part of students. The author uses an "arenas" classification to organize and frame the systematic comparative analysis, rather than the traditional "three worlds" framework. The "arenas" classification reflects the contemporary political, economic, and social realities of different political systems, allowing the author to provide an historical, theoretical, and conceptual background through nine country case studies.

Review

Cooking Light's #1 Cookbook of 2013:
“A gazillion vegan books were published this year, but [Vedge], from the chefs at our favorite Philadelphia restaurant, features breakthrough techniques and flavors for anyone who loves to eat plants year-round.”

One of Entertainment Weekly’s 10 Best Cookbooks of 2013

One of Yoga Journal’s 10 Best Cookbooks of 2013

“This cookbook is about putting vegetables front and center in astonishing and innovated ways.”
—TheKitchn.com

“Warm and approachable, and filled with tempting recipes that push boundaries just enough. Landau and Jacoby . . . really love their local, seasonal veggies [and] showcase produce in this collection of intriguing small and large plates, soups and stews, and recipes from their 'dirt list' (a daily list of dishes at the restaurant featuring what’s just come off the plant or out of the ground).”
—Publishers Weekly

“[Vedge] offers deeply satisfying vegetable dishes for year-round eating.”
—Epicurious.com

“[Vedge] reintroduces vegetables, teaching home chefs how to cook them up, dress them down and enjoy their natural flavors . . . And, like any great cookbook, it has a list of cocktails after the desserts. Vedge proves that vegetables aren't just meat's sidekicks.”
—The Chicago Tribune

“Landau and Jacoby's Vedge restaurant in Philly is the standout vegan restaurant in the U.S. It won an award from us last year, and another from GQ this year. The chefs call their joint a vegetable, not vegan, restaurant—and it's a careful distinction, more about celebrating intense, fresh, and surprising flavors than serving up a philosophy. This book will widen any cook's horizons, with dishes like baked carrots with a Dijon-and-sauerkraut chickpea sauce that evokes Reuben sandwich flavors. . . . The beet juice-sweetened pot de creme was astounding: rich, dense, and smooth, like a little bowl of truffle filling. Anyone who cooks vegetables should buy this book.”
—Cooking Light

“Philadelphia's award-winning vegan restaurant is good enough to win over any hard-core carnivore. For the first time, Vedge is releasing a cookbook with recipes for celery-root shepherd's pie and chocolate-stuffed beignets.”
—GrubStreet.com

“Chefs Richard Landau and Kate Jacoby are veggie virtuosos. Expect every recipe in Vedge to be a mouthwatering celebration that will dazzle your senses and taste buds.”
—Kris Carr, New York Times–bestselling author of Crazy Sexy Kitchen

“Rich Landau is a highly skilled, inspirational chef who always makes me happy with his food and his energy. He and his wife Kate have created an incredible restaurant in Philadelphia and a work of art in this book. Vegan? Yes! Magic, no . . . this is pure passion at work! I can’t wait to get my hands on this book and the golden beet recipe!”
—Amanda Freitag, Executive Chef and Chopped Judge

“Rich and Kate's thoughtful, ingredient-driven cooking at Vedge enriches Philadelphia's already vibrant restaurant culture, and this book makes their techniques accessible to home cooks. Vedge is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in elevating their cooking skills, vegan or not, and a solid introduction to the value of seasonal eating.”
—Chef Jose Garces

“Landau and Jacoby have the gift of making global vegan cuisine sexy and delicious.”
—Joy Pierson, Nutritionist, Restaurateur, Candle Cafes & Candle 79

“Just like dining at Vedge, flipping through the pages of Landau and Jacoby’s cookbook makes one feel the couple’s commitment to spreading vegetable love . . . their approach to vegetables is nothing but pure and entirely relevant.”
—Philadelphia City Paper

“VegNews’ 2012 Restaurant of the Year (and the only veg restaurant to make it on GQ's '12 Best Restaurants of 2013' list), coveted recipes from Philadelphia's dining darling is coming to a bookstore near you this July. Let husband-and-wife team Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby (owners and chefs of the famed eatery) transform your dinner parties this summer with dishes like Charred Shishito Peppers, Porcini and Celery Root Shepherd's Pie, and Chocolate Stuffed Beignets."
—VegNews.com

Praise for Vedge the restaurant:

“Is Vedge the best vegan restaurant in America? It might be one of the best restaurants, period.”
—Philadelphia magazine

“Vegetables are thriving. They’re no longer thought of as secondary to the magnificence of meat. They get equal billing, sometimes the entire marquee. Never have they seemed so visionary as at Vedge.”
—Alan Richman, GQ

“Rich Landau is a magician. What other explanation is there for the amazing tricks he pulls off with vegetables? Fingerling Potatoes with Creamy Worcestershire Sauce? Roasted Cauliflower with Black Vinegar and Kimchi Cream? In every case, the veggies retain their flavor essence while surprising and delighting. It's a culinary feat that seems beyond mere mortals.”
—Philadelphia Daily News

Great ideas, careless production
By Robert Morse
This is a beautiful cookbook with many interesting recipes but unfortunately was very carelessly produced. Some of the recipes are fantastic. The "Whole Roasted Carrots with Black Lentils" was delicious. However, other recipes have very obvious mistakes which ruin them. I made the Yukon Gold Potato Pierogies following the recipe exactly, but ran into a lot of problems. First of all the recipe calls for the dough to be rolled out to 1/4" thick and then have 18 4" circles cut out of it. When I rolled the dough out to 1/4", it only made a sheet large enough to cut out about 6 circles. It had to be rolled much thinner to be able to make enough pierogie wrappers. Second, the recipe calls for 5 teaspoons of salt added to the ingredients with additional salt used for the water to cook the potatoes and cook the pierogies. This is for a recipe that makes 18 pierogies. I love salt, but this was almost inedible. It seemed like someone had made a mistake in scaling the recipe, and that the authors had never tested the recipe as written. We had similar problems with the Celery Root Fritters. While the batter was tasty, it was not firm enough to make fitters - we ended up with celery root mush. It seemed like an ingredient was left out. This inconsistency was bolstered by the picture that accompanies the recipe, which shows fitters with large pieces of vegetables, while the recipe calls for everything to be diced.

It's frustrating to use a cookbook like this. The authors clearly have a lot of good ideas, but careless production makes it difficult or impossible to execute these recipes to their full potential.

In Love
By Fran
As a long time vegetarian who often eats vegan meals - the restaurant and the cookbook are from heaven. Landau says he would even cook vegetables he doesn't like such as brussel sprouts. I made them as an appetizer and one picky dinner guest couldn't stop eating them! Even though some of the ingredients are on the scarce side, it's a lovely book and inspirational. Well worth it.

A MUST HAVE BOOK for any Kitchen
By LouiseG
I drove two hours have dinner at Vedge in Philly, going in, I had HIGH expectations after reading all the reviews and raves. I feel in love with the food!!! and the service was on point. BUT I got a big problem ... my wallet is not big enough to eat at the restaurant more often. So I got the The Vedge cookbook hoping it's not too complicated. I read the book in one night. I love how the author is aware that we're not in some fancy restaurant kitchen. He gives us stories when he's in his own home kitchen and alternatives when we're unable to find ingredients. He explain the key ingredients, what to look for in quality and even names the brand name that he uses.

I made the Roasted Carrots With Black Lentils and Green Harissa, was so easy and yummy. I HATE Brussels sprouts, no way was going to make the recipe for them but i tried it at the restaurant first. So now I can say I like the sprouts, and I made them for the first time. I made a big batch of all the broth stocks, and divided into smaller portions& froze them for later use.

This book is beautiful and perfect for holiday gifts. I'm going give this book to few vegan chefs in the midwest in hopes they get inspired for their restaurant. Thank You Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby for sharing your amazing recipes. If it was me, I would probably been selfish & kept it a secret.

Detailed Review of Contents...Book Contains Pictures for Every Single Step, Meal Plans, Timelines, etc.
By Mayflower Girl
I've never eaten at El Bulli, and I know Chef Adria only via some guest appearances on TV. I can't say enough good things about this cookbook. It will work for novices and experts alike. There are tons of tips, and many of the sauces have freezing instructions as well. Pretty much every step has a full-color photo, so it's hard to make a mistake. There are no strange ingredients either. My only complaint (if I can say that) is nearly every meal contains a fish course--and I'm not a fan of fish. My husband is, however, so thinks it's the best cookbook I own. :)

When I bought it, Amazon did not have any way to preview it. So, I'll try and tell you what's in it.

First, there are the basic recipes. Each one of these has step by step close-up pictures.

Picada, Tomato sauce, Sofrito, Bolognese sauce, Romesco sauce, Pesto sauce, Barbecue sauce, Teriyaki sauce, Chimichurri sauce, Croutons, and Aiolo. Most have two different quantities you can make depending on your needs.

Stocks: One nice tip he gives is that they reboil the stuff they made a stock with, calling it second stock....and then use that as the water the next time they make stock.

Fish stock, chicken stock, beef stock, and ham stock.

Now the meals. There are 31. Each one contains ingredients for 2, 6, 20, and 75 people. Each one contains step by step pictures and a timeline.

Meal 1: Caesar salad, Cheeseburger & potato chips, Santiago cake

Meal 2: Pasta bolognese, mackerel & potato stew, chocolate cookies

Meal 3: Vichyssoise, lamb w/mustard & mint, chocolate truffles

Meal 4: Beans w/clams, salt cod & vegetable stew, baked apples

Meal 5: Polenta & parmesan gratin, sesame sardines w/carrot salad, mango w/white chocolate yogurt

Meal 6: Potato chip omelet, pork loin w/ peppers, coconut macaroons

Meal 7: Saffron risotto w/mushrooms, Catalan style turkey, Yogurt foam w/strawberries

Meal 8: Roasted eggplant w/miso dressing, sausages w/tomato sauce, creme Catalane

Meal 9: Lime-marinated fish, osso buco, pina colada

Meal 10: Miso soup w/clams, Mackarel w/vinaigrette, almond cookies

Meal 11: Fried egg w/asparagus, chicken wings w/ mushrooms, sangria w/ fruit

Meal 12: Potato salad, Thai beef curry, strawberries w/vinegar

Meal 13: Farfalle w/ pesto, Japanese-style bream, Mandarin oranges w/Cointreau

Meal 14: Tomato & basil salad, crab & rice stew, coconut flan

Meal 15: Bread & garlic soup, Mexican-style slow-cooked pork, Figs w/cream & Kirsch

Meal 16: Noodles w/shitake & ginger, duck w/ chimichurri sauce, pistachio custard

Meal 17: Baked potatoes w/romesco sauce, whiting in salsa verde , rice pudding

Meal 18: Guacamole w/tortilla chips, Mexican style chicken w/ rice, Watermelon w/ menthol candies

Meal 19: Spaghetti w/tomato & basil, Fried fish w/garlic, Caramel foam

Meal 20: Cauliflower w/bechamel, pork ribs w/bbq sauce, Banana w/lime

Meal 21: Gazpacho, black rice w/squid, bread with chocolate and olive oil

Meal 22: Peas & ham, roasted chicken w/potato straws, pineapple w/molasses & lime

Meal 23: Tagliatelle carbonara, cod & green pepper sandwich, almond soup w/ice cream

Meal 24: Garbanzo beans w/spinach & egg, glazed teriyaki pork belly, sweet potato w/ honey & cream

Meal 25: Potatoes and green beans w/Chantilly, quail w/couscous, caramelized pears

Meal 26: Fish soup, sausages w/mushrooms, oranges w/honey, olive oil, and salt

Meal 27: Mussels w/paprika, baked sea bass, caramel pudding

Meal 28: Melon w/cured ham, rice w/duck, chocolate cake

Meal 29: Roasted vegetables w/olive oil, salmon stewed w/lentils, white chocolate cream

Meal 30: grilled lettuce hearts, veal w/red wine and mustard, chocolate mousse

Meal 31: Waldorf salad, noodle soup w/mussels, melon & mint soup w/pink grapefruit

There are not that many vegetarian options--and none of these are bargain meals. Still, Chef Adria gives good tips like on what to do with leftover almond pulp after making almond milk, tomato pulp, etc. Sounds like nothing is ever wasted.

This is a beautiful book. Even if you don't think you'll make an entire meal as written, I'm sure you'll enjoy the detailed instructions and fabulous recipes for many of the different courses.

Can't recommend to buy
By Eric M. Berger
I was very excited when I first saw this book, the photos and descriptions really are awesome. The problem is, there are (apparently) many errors when it comes to the recipes and quantities involved. I first noticed something was wrong at the very beginning of the book where he lays out his recipe for beef stock. The recipe calls for 4 ounces of beef, 1 1/2 ounces of beef bones, and 6 POUNDS of celery. Far be it from me to criticize Ferran Adria, but this is clearly wrong.

Lo and behold, I search reviews here and on the internet and it is a known problem that the translation into English is plagued with errors of this sort. Worse, Phaeton Press is fully aware of the errors but won't publish an errata page. If they would just do that I'd be willing to write in the correct quantities directly by hand with a sharpie, but they won't do that, nor have they answered my email queries on the subject.

I gave it 2 stars because many of the recipes are still doable and I LOVE the concept of the book, but since they won't publish corrections that means that I can't trust the quantities for any recipe or the extrapolations for different numbers of people, which really bothers me, so my review is "can't recommend for purchase".

UPDATE - September 2012

FYI - For those who care, I ordered a copy of the British version which has metric measurements, but they are alt least correct and every cooking tool I own had English and metric markings anyway. Come to think of it, isn't it funny that "English" measurements are wrong, yet I had to buy the British version in order to get the correct weights and measures? I put my original US version in the "library" of my apartment building's laundry room for whoever wants it.

Great book for Meal planning, many recipe errors
By David
This book is great for planning a family meal or for a larger party. Just choose a meal plan and follow the time line.
However, there are many errors in ingredient amounts. Some you can guess at and correct, some you can't. For example, the caramelized pears (meal 25), has you use 1 cup of water for 2 people, 2 1/4 cups for 20 but 2 1/2 for 6. After making the recipe, my guess is that for six you want to use 1 1/2 cups water. The chocolate cookies (meal 2) is a little harder to decode. For 20 cookies it calls for 2 tsp, but for 100 it calls for 3/4 cup. The spices only double when the cookie count increases five fold. Beautiful book, but recipes require very careful examination before proceeding.

Where the art of improvisation meets the art of literature.

"Colin Mochrie is a comedic and creative force to be reckoned with. Therefore, this book is a literary force to be reckoned with. If you are too lazy for reckoning, just read this book and everything will work out nicely." ―Brad Sherwood

"Colin Mochrie is devastatingly handsome, perilously smart, and smells like warm maple syrup. Step inside his hilarious and complex mind, and abandon all hope." ―Aisha Tyler

Based on the improv game First Line, Last Line, Colin Mochrie of Whose Line is it Anyway? fame, puts a unique spin on works of classic literature. Taking the first line and last line from classic books and poems, Colin recasts these familiar stories in his own trademark offbeat style:

  • A verbose coyote becomes the star of A TALE OF TWO CRITTERS
  • Ishmael is a struggling actor hunting for a good hair day in MOBY
  • A rainy day at home becomes a zombie-killing adventure in THE CAT AND MY DAD
  • Mighty Casey strikes out again in CASEY AT THE BAR
These stories, and many more, prove that no literary masterpiece is too big, or too small, for the improvisational comedy treatment.

Not Quite 'Whose Line' But Who Cares?
By Robert F Gilleece
Colin Mochrie has done exactly what he set out to do. He made a point, in his introduction, of stressing how little work he liked to do. Well this book comes across as too much fun to be called work! I am not saying that he didn't work hard, but the great ones always make their job seem easy.
Each chapter is constructed from the first and last lines of classic stories with the meat of the sacrilegious sandwich provided by the author. The result is one hell of a delicatessen!
He put a little of himself into each story (actually, more than a little into the chapter entitled "Moby"). The narrative of each tale flows smoothly and just when you think you know where the story is going - it ends! Followers of his live comedy and TV appearances will immediately recognize his departures and non-sequitors; the rhythm and cadence of the characters' protestations are unmistakable!
The reader imagines Colin talking himself into a corner and wishing a Ryan Styles or Brad Sherwood was there to help him escape. Even though he was stuck with nothing but his reflection in the literary mirror he did not disappoint. This book is an insight into what a real fan could only hope for: "An Evening with Colin Mochrie and Colin Mochrie".

Clever, well-written homages and parodies that hit the funny bone
By Bob Milne
If you're even a casual fan of Colin Mochrie, then you already know that he is a funny, funny man. He has a peculiar sort of humor, blending Canadian stereotypical politeness with an often surprising edge, but he is as clever as he is frantic. When I first hear he was taking the Whose Line is it Anyway approach to a short story collection with Not Quite the Classics, I knew I was going to have to read it.

A Study in Ha Ha opens the collection with a Sherlock Holmes homage so absurd, so inconceivable, it works astoundingly well. In it, Holmes decides to make a study of jokes, with the intention of becoming the world's first stand-up comic. Moby: Toupee or Not Toupee is a tale of a different sort, a blackly comic horror story about a bald man who lacks confidence, and the living toupee that does far more than just boost his self-esteem.

One of the early highlights of the collection is Casey at the Bar, a straight up homage of Casey at the bat, with Colin's version being the story of a washed up Leaf's goalie. Funny stuff, and as it enjoys a few wildly humorous tangents. My favorite entry, however, has to be A Tale of Two Critters. It's written as a very stuffy Dickensian tale, capturing the narrative essence of the original, which actually suits the story of poor old Wile E. Coyote very well. Without spoiling it, let's just say that anybody who's ever wanted to see the roadrunner get his due won't be disappointed!

The Cat and My Dad is another rhyming tale, this time putting a very Seussian spin on the post-apocalyptic zombie story. It's a fun story, surprisingly dark given the singsong verse, and it reminds us precisely why polite, law-abiding, poorly-armed Canadians would have a hard time with zombies. Along the same lines, Twas Not Right Before Christmas continues the rhyming lyrical theme, offering up a Twilight Zone mash-up of all the holiday standards, coming together under one man's roof. If there's any justice in the world, this will be the next animated holiday special . . . just please don't let Tim Allen or Adam Sandler be involved.

While I had hopes that Not Quite the Classics would be funny, I honestly did not expect it to be as clever and as well-written as it is. Clearly, Mochrie put a lot of thought and imagination into his story choices, and while a few missed my funny bone, other had me laughing out loud (and driving my wife crazy with my insistence on reading passages aloud). How each story will hit you depends as much on your sense of humor as your familiarity with the source material, but it's an entertaining bunch of tales.

Great for fans of classic literature!
By Jo Swan
If you like whose line, you'll love this book. I could hear Colin Mochrie in my head while I was reading it and ghat just made me laugh more. As an English teacher I really loved the concept of these short stories and I'll be using them in class to inspire the kids with their own short stories. Great book for fans of classic literature!

A practical guide to profiting from institutional trading trends

The key to being a successful trader is finding a system that works and sticking with it. Author Al Brooks has done just that. By simplifying his trading system and trading only 5-minute price charts he's found a way to capture profits regardless of market direction or economic climate. His first book, Reading Price Charts Bar by Bar, offered an informative examination of his system, but it didn't allow him to get into the real nuts and bolts of the approach. Now, with this new series of books, Brooks takes you step by step through the entire process.

By breaking down his trading system into its simplest pieces: institutional piggybacking or trend trading (the topic of this particular book in the series), trading ranges, and transitions or reversals, this three book series offers access to Brooks' successful methodology. Price Action Trends Bar by Bar describes in detail what individual bars and combinations of bars can tell a trader about what institutions are doing. This is critical because the key to making money in trading is to piggyback institutions and you cannot do that unless you understand what the charts are telling you about their behavior. This book will allow you to see what type of trend is unfolding, so can use techniques that are specific to that type of trend to place the right trades.

  • Discusses how to profit from institutional trading trends using technical analysis
  • Outlines a detailed and original trading approach developed over the author's successful career as an independent trader
  • Other books in the series include Price Action Trading Ranges Bar by Bar and Price Action Reversals Bar by Bar

If you're looking to make the most of your time in today's markets the trading insights found in Price Action Trends Bar by Bar will help you achieve this goal.

From the Inside Flap

The key to being a successful trader is finding a system that works and sticking with it. Author Al Brooks, a technical analysis contributor to Futures magazine and an independent trader for twenty-five years, has done just that. Over the course of his career, he's found a way to capture consistent profits regardless of market direction or economic climate. And now, with his new three-book series—which focuses on how to use price action to trade the markets—Brooks takes you step by step through the entire process.

In order to put his methodology in perspective, Brooks examines an essential array of price action basics and trends in this initial book; moves on to provide important insights on trading ranges, order management, and the mathematics of trading in the next book, Trading Price Action TRADING RANGES; and then discusses trend reversals, day trading, daily charts, options, and the best setups for all time frames in the third, and final, book of this series, Trading Price Action REVERSALS.

Written with the serious trader in mind, Trading Price Action TRENDS skillfully addresses how understanding price action and effectively reading price charts, bar by bar, can help you follow unfolding patterns, which are all initiated by institutions, helping you to profitably piggyback onto their trades by setting up early entries with tight stops. Engaging and informative, this reliable guide:

  • Discusses how to trade trends, trading ranges, breakouts, and reversals
  • Examines the basic tools of trend lines and trend channels, which can be used to highlight the existence of trends and trading ranges
  • Provides a detailed description of the significance of each type of candle, as well as the mathematics that traders need to know when placing trades
  • And much more

Throughout the book, Brooks focuses primarily on 5 minute candle charts—all of which are created with TradeStation—to illustrate basic principles, but also discusses daily and weekly charts. And since he trades more than just E-mini S&P 500 futures, Brooks also details how price action can be used as the basis for trading stocks, forex, Treasury Note futures, and options. Foryour convenience, a companion website, which canbe found at wiley.com/go/tradingtrends, contains all of the charts provided in the book.

Trading is a rewarding endeavor, but it's hard work and requires relentless discipline. To succeed, you have to stick to your rules and avoid emotion—and you have to patiently wait to take only the best trades. Trading Price Action TRENDS is your first step in achieving this goal. With this guide, and the other two books in the series, you'll discover how to develop the patience and discipline to follow a sound system, and reap potentially huge financial rewards in the process.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Trading Price Action Trends

"Al Brooks has written a book every day trader should read. On all levels, he has kept trading simple, straightforward, and approachable. By teaching traders that there are no rules, just guidelines, he has allowed basic common sense to once again rule how real traders should approach the market. This is a must-read for any trader that wants to learn his own path to success."

—Noble DraKoln, founder, SpeculatorAcademy.com, and author of Trade Like a Pro and Winning the Trading Game

"A great trader once told me that success was a function of focused energy. This mantra is proven by Al Brooks, who left a thriving ophthalmology practice to become a day trader. Al's intense focus on daily price action has made him a successful trader. A born educator, Al also is generous with his time, providing detailed explanations on how he views daily price action and how other traders can implement his ideas with similar focus and dedication.?? Al's book is no quick read, but an in depth roadmap on how he trades today's volatile markets, complete with detailed strategies, real-life examples, and hard knocks advice."

Best Trading Books Ever Written.
By BK
Not an easy read and not for someone with a casual or passing interest in trading. I had to read these books 3 times to really grasp the concepts that Al teaches. Now that I have followed his advice and gone through a zillion charts of the currency pairs I trade and pointing out setups, I have developed the ability to spot trades that have over a 50% chance of making 1.5-2x my risk. The hardest part of trading in my mind is developing the skill to ONLY take those trades and never ever place another order outside of my trading plan! I watched his video course and that helped me grasp a lot of the concepts in a different way, then I went back and read the books for a 4th time, and then I started developing my own trading systems based on Al's concepts.

A lot of muppets out there will criticise Al because he speaks tin vague terms (ie usually) and doesn't give you a complete trading system. I also hear criticism that Al must not be a profitable trader because he spends his time writing books. My gut feeling (which could very well be totally wrong) is that Al is an extremely skilled and insightful trader who has such a deep understanding of markets compared to most professional traders (I have worked on several trading desks and can definitively say I have never met any bank or hedge fund trader who has even a shred of the insight that Al provides in his books...not saying they aren't out there, but they are RARE) and I also get the impression he is a bit arrogant and wants to be worshipped as a Guru...AS HE WELL SHOULD BE!

His 3 volume set has changed my life. It is true that Al doesn't give you a trading plan on a silver platter. He does however give the serious student of his works the knowledge to understand how markets function and how to spot high probability setups, whether scalps or swings.
It is up to the reader to build his own trading system around Al's methods if the reader is so inclined. I personally don't scalp and only focus on trades where my reward is 2x risk. I have done extensive backtesting on my carefully selected setups from Al's teachings on my favourite currency pairs..all my backtesting is done by hand, and I only look for great looking textbook setups. I am not a programmer and have no idea how to do this other than manually, but I actually think doing it manually is best since it helps me tune in even more with the market.

Once you have a clear grasp of what Al is teaching, you have at your disposal a lot of different price action setups and a zillion and one financial instruments out there to trade them on. Why not backtest your various system ideas on different instruments and see what works? The sky is truly the limit.

Finally, I would like to say to Al: Thank you for taking the time to write the 3 greatest masterpieces ever published in the history of mankind.

By Keith Sipos
Incredible course. Months to capture it's truths. Brooks' mind as an eye surgeon prepared him well to transfer his analytic mind to know/and write this tome of truths about day trading. It will be many years before something matches this if ever. This said, I might urge YOU dear reader to invest in the course on line 1st, even though it's more expensive. $249/ It's so much easier to absorb, and navigate through the many "modules" of learning with the reinforcement visually seen and explained. Brooks explains calmly, and soothingly, with simple language about complex ideas that build on themselves. Done in well thought out sequences with ample charts, the downloaded course reinforces what the books present, and with the 1st of the 2 purchases, perhaps the download method is easier to tackle. I have both resources, and now with 6 months into the purchase know I have many more months of information to glean, and probably years of benefits from it all as well as refer to. Thank you Mr. Brooks for your contribution.

Hard to read, for a good reason
By DashNY
Do you want to know why your indicators don't work for you but they do for someone else? Have you heard the expression "Price action is pure?" That's what this book is all about.

Open a chart, e.g. a daily candlebar chart of AAPL. Then apply Bollinger Bands, then moving averages (SMA/EMA), then Stochastics, then MACD. Oh my... What are you looking at now? Exactly!!! You're looking at the indicators while you need to be looking at the chart itself, the patterns, the candle types, e.g. dojis, hammers, etc. The chart generally tells you everything you need to know, e.g. who's in control: bulls or bears, where the institutional buying / selling pressure is, important S&R levels, and so on.

This is not the easiest book to read. Every chapter usually has a chart followed by lots of text explain it, so you'll be going back and forth between the chart and the text. The author recommends printing out the charts separately and has those charts on his website.

That being said, it's still the best book I've seen so far on price action and it has helped me a lot.
Five stars easily.
