To Come Up with the Right Answers, We Need to Start with the Right Questions

I am a print dinosaur who is now part of a digital startup that seeks to envision the next step forward in the evolution of online news. I found this book very helpful, it really laid out all the questions and issues one can imagine, all in one place. It's easy to become scatter-brained when considering all the possibilities. "Geeks Bearing Gifts" helps put it all into convenient boxes. I kept wanting there to be one last chapter in which the author says, "OK, I've just spent several chapters identifying all the issues, now here are the ANSWERS." But that's up to us to figure out, isn't it? Nobody has the answers just yet. There will be lots of experiments in coming years; eventually our industry will find a path forward. It has to, we are needed. While many of us newspaper people think of current days as something to dread, author Jeff Jarvis shows that with a slight change of attitude, it's easy to see we are entering an era of great adventure. Let's all put on our creative thinking caps and figure this out! We can do this.

The future of journalism may depend on relationships

In marketing and advertising, there’s growing interest in serving people as individuals rather than in mass. Forget big data. Let’s focus on small data so we can develop relationships with people and provide what they truly need, want and expect. Jeff Jarvis advocates such a relationship model for journalism that rebels against the mass communication tradition. His recommendation goes beyond building relationships between journalists and readers; it includes engagement among news providers. A collaborative model that links many stakeholder groups seems to me a sensible response to the digital disruption that knocked the breath out of print journalism. But Jarvis doesn’t provide solutions. Instead, he offers eliminations and possibilities. For example, he makes a great case for why most publications (especially hyperlocal ones) should ditch the pay wall. He also explores how news sources might use tools to help serve people’s particular needs and interests. Of note, he asks why behavioral ads are so common, yet no one has developed a similar system for content. My only beef with his essay is that the possibilities are not discussed with depth. It would’ve been great to read how a local newspaper might implement one of the many things he tosses out there, like the Guardian’s membership model. I am particularly intrigued by that one. Good read, folks. Lots of food for thought.

It doesn't lament on journalism's past, but it clearly states the reality of where journalism is in today, and offers dozens of ways journalists can take advantage of it in the future. It also offers some great insights into the tools the journalists of tomorrow are going to need.

A Most Worthy Addition to the Profile Literature

When I initiated an internship program for new traders at a proprietary trading firm, I began by providing students with a conceptual overview of markets and the factors that make markets move. That overview drew heavily upon the book "Mind Over Markets" by James Dalton, Eric Jones, and Robert Dalton. Quite simply, that book is the most readable, lucid, and insightful work on the auction process underlying trading markets that I have yet encountered.

You can imagine, then, my delight when I had the opportunity to read an advance copy of the authors' new work, "Markets in Profile" and provide a review statement for the book's cover. I turn down these endorsement requests rather often. Frankly, many of them are simply favors being done by buddies and don't reflect an actual reading of the text. The least authors can do for their readers is keep it real.

There was no problem in my keeping it real when I wrote that "Good books teach, but the best books enlighten". Markets in Profile is one of those enlightening books, because it takes the conceptual framework from the first book and applies it to concrete trading time frames and trading scenarios. In that sense, I would say it is a worthy bridge between theory/understanding and practice.

A core theme of Markets in the Dalton, Dalton, and Jones text is the following nugget: "If you can correctly identify which timeframe is in control of market activity, and you have a good understanding of how the individual timeframes generally behave, then you are in a stronger position to trade, invest, and effectively control risk." The practical aspect of the book is that it illustrates how to read the Market Profile to grasp the long-, intermediate-, and short-term auctions and place current market activity into a proper context.

Time and again I have observed that a trading edge comes from understanding what is happening at the timeframes greater than the one you're trading. If you're in a trading range, you might want to be prepared for a breakout. Which way is it likely to break? Using price, time, and volume to see how value is being established at those larger timeframes provides invaluable clues.

As the authors also explain, observing volume patterns as the market moves away from value at one timeframe is very important to understanding whether or not we will return to value or reprice value (perhaps in line with the longer-term auctions). Seeing these dynamics evolve over time helps traders understand what is likely to occur, but also *why*.

I find the authors' use of examples, charts, and Market Profile diagrams to be quite helpful. This is not an encyclopedic work; it's a very readable 200 pages. By the end, however, readers will have a solid understanding of how to apply auction-based principles across timeframes and frame their trade ideas with that broader understanding. A particularly practical chapter is the one on day-trading, which shows how these principles are relevant to the active trader.

The authors make clear that Market Profile is not a trading system, but a framework from which trading ideas can be derived. My analogy isn't perfect, but perhaps it will make sense: Just as the periodic table helps chemists organize their understanding of elements and predict how elements are likely to interact with one another, the Market Profile organizes data on price, time, and volume to help traders anticipate market behavior. We have types of elements (metals, non-metals) and combinations of elements, and we have types of markets and combinations of markets: knowing type provides invaluable clues as to likely behavior in various situations.

It's rare that I don't have some reservations about a book. This one is clearly written, straightforward, and doesn't get away from its topic. There's no fluff, and (mercifully) there's no chest-beating self-congratulations from authors who try to make themselves out to be gurus. Markets in Profile is simply a guide for putting theory into practice at different time frames. That, in itself, is unique in the trading literature.

Looking at what price alone doesn't tell you

At only 200 pages, Markets in Profile isn't exactly a hefty tome. Don't let its length deceive you, though. This is an intellectual book which incorporates a fairly wide array of topics, including some common academic theories, in to the mix. While there are loads of graphics included to provide visual examples in support of the text, which serves to cut down the actual amount of textual content, do not expect to breeze through this book in an afternoon sitting. It delves in to the heart of trading in a way that will force you to examine how you approach the markets.

One of the things that most, if not all of us forget when we're analyzing and trading the markets is exactly what's going on. We see the movement of prices and fail to remember what is really happening to create that price movement. That's the auction process. To quote the authors, "... price and volume move over time to facilitate trade in the pursuit of value."

A great deal of effort is expended by market participants to determine value. Fundamental stock market analysts spend hour upon hour trying to come up with a figure that represents the worth of a company based on earnings, book value, and other factors. That is all fine and good, but it is the market, in the end, which defines value. And it does so on a running basis.

The problem we market participants have is that we focus too much on price, which the authors indicate is merely the advertising side of the auction process. They demonstrate how price is just a way for the market to seek value. There's an important distinction here. Price is not value. It is just a way for the market to find value, which is defined as the price area where volume is generated because buyers and sellers meet in agreement.

To help us understand that process, the authors use some easily understood examples to define the basic mechanisms of the financial markets. They are the same as in other markets, after all. The process might operate faster and on a broader scale, but otherwise it is the same. Sellers are trying to recieve the highest possible value in the sales price, while buyers are trying to minimize the price they pay in relation to the value the expect to recieve. When there is disagreement between the two, little trading takes place. When they agree, lots of trading happens. It doesn't matter if the product is automobiles, banannas, or stocks.

About the first half of Markets in Profile is laying the kind of mental groundwork needed for really getting in to the analytic method known as Market Profile. Market Profile is the technique the authors use to identify the levels where the market has found value and when the market is in search of value. It is an approach first developed by Peter Steidlmayer (see Steidlmayer on Markets) at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) for the futures market, and which they spent considerable time defining and outlining in their previous book, Mind Over Markets.

On the surface, Market Profile appears to be just another way to present price history in graphic form. The authors, however, demonstrate how the Market Profile distribution patterns put "market-generated information" to excellent use in identifying value and the market's pursuit of it.

Using numerous examples, the authors explain in detail the ways Market Profile can be used to identify what they refer to as "asymmetric opportunities". These are market set-ups where not only do the odds more favor a move in one particular direction, but the situation is such that a move in that direction is likely to be substantially larger than were the market to go the other way. Think of it as you would a trading system that has a win rate incess of 50% and a high average winner to average loser ratio. That's a pretty good combination!

This is a book that can make a huge difference in the way you look at the markets, and by extention, the way you trade, but only if you let it. The authors challenge quite a few elements of trading. Some readers may put up walls where that happens. The open-minded reader, though, will find themself thinking along completely new paths and gaining massive insights in to the way they see price action.

(For the record, years ago, when I was a professional analyst focusing on the futures market, I used Market Profile extensively and with considerable success. In the intervening years I fell away from it when I shifted market focus, but I'm now making a move back.)

Good content, IF YOU CAN GET PAST THE OVERUSE OF CAPS LOCK.

The content itself is good (just good -- not groundbreaking by any means), but the format is extremely distracting. The author elected to CAPITALIZE RECURRING THEMES AND IMPORTANT POINTS THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. His intention was to help trigger the reader's memory and call attention to critical information, but IT'S SO OVERUSED THAT IT DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. After a few chapters, I felt as though I was being punished for reading the book BECAUSE USING ALL CAPS MAKES IT FEEL LIKE YOU ARE BEING YELLED AT. I finally had to stop reading about midway through, because this format is TOO ANNOYING TO CONTINUE.

Radically Great Read

I am an internet marketing professional and seem to buy way too many "SEO Books" from Amazon - they all get resold as I lose interest and find nothing inspiring in them.

This book is by far the best read since John Battelle and The Search

For those of you that really want to enhance your online reputation (and don't we all?) this is a must read.

Some great examples of big companies needing "damage repair" after a blog post and some of the ways great companies have repaired their damage.

Let's face it the Internet gives us citizen journalism and all the brutally frank criticisms that can bring from an average Joe.

If you're into online PR and being Radically Transparent you should by this book and unlock the power of your walled garden

Internet Reputation Management - the best

Basically the book describes how to position your company or yourself on the internet. It is partly a "self-help" book, but is also a good vehicle to establish a knowledge base. You will also be able to optimize your ability to hire advisors or subcontractors in the field.

Anyway, in my opinion. every business person needs the fairly basic knowledge about reputation management on the net that is provided in this book. Personal and company reputation and image on the internet are not just going to be essential in the future. It already is. The only question is whether you acknowledge it or not.

There are a number of books in the market in this area each focusing on different aspects of the issues. You can easily find more specialized books on for example SEO (actually the authors recommend some books in this specific area). However, this is the best book with a general approach in this area I have found so far.

The book is easy to read without being too over simplistic. In my opinion the authors' recommendations are based on good judgments. It includes a number of useful examples and references.

I would like to emphasize one aspect with the book which is very rare and indicates an extraordinary self-discipline from both the authors. They do not brag about their own achievements in the area. They are smart enough to understand that any sensible reader would assume they are excellent advisors and teachers in the area! This means that the book also will be well accepted outside the US for example in Asia where I live.

Perhaps many will disagree (not at least the authors), but I think the term "Radically Transparent" which also happens to be the main title of the book is a bit silly. The term indicates that being 100 % open is a goal in itself which is a view I strongly object to. But perhaps it is a fact that any author with some self-respect (I have been there myself!) feel a need to create a new "buss" word. However, as the term is sensibly defined in the book and therefore does not in any way harm the general value of the book.

In my view the book represent an excellent and extraordinary useful vehicle in the area of internet reputation and image management. Geir Lolleng.

Good Web 2.0 reference, with caveats

If you're looking for a comprehensive overview of the Web 2.0 world, to manage your business brand and/or your personal brand, Radically Transparent is a good introduction. However, if you are knowledgeable about these topics, you may find this book basic and repetitious.

The book's tone shifts from colloquial to corporate to academic, and it appears to be a collection of separate blog articles without a well-articulated structure or flow. It offers fresh, valuable case studies that would be suitable for discussion in MBA programs, though there are a number of grammatical and editorial errors, such as run-on sentences.
The book could benefit from a summary of key points and references at the end of each section, and would do well to update recommended URLs via the authors' blog and online newsletter.
Recommended with these caveats.

One of my favorite books of all time!

I first read this story when I was a teen searching for the meaning of life and felt I had to choose between sensuality and spirit. At that time Narcissus seemed to have chosen the path to God that most resonated with me and I followed the path of the renunciate. It wasn't until 40 years later that I realized that the way to Spirit for me was really through the senses and by fully embacing my "creaturehood" I could truly find the divine that I'd longed for all those years before. Hesse is masterful in examining this quandary and does a beautiful job in exploring this timeless issue.

Wisdom is found in the journey.

I am an avid reader and I have a pretty wide range of books, very few do I ever read twice - and this is one of them.

Like many I had read Steppenwolf in high school - I don't know if it was because it had the word "wolf" in it or that the book had been referenced in rock-n-roll. When I read it - it was NOTHING like what I expected it to be. I was engrossed in the story and I quickly ran out to read other novels by the author. My school library only had Siddhartha, but I devoured that too. I thought that was all there is - that was all the library had and as a high school kid - attention spans are short. Those early reads of Hesse were more influential on me in high school than most other works of literature.

It wasn't until years later (in my early 20s) that I saw more of his titles in a used book store. I snatched them all (Beneath the Wheel, Damein, Knulp, Glass Bead Game, etc.) I read them all - as they all should be read.

Out of all his works, it is Narcissus and Goldmund (IMHO) that is his silent magnum opus. It is a blend of several of his other works, characters like Knulp and Damein can be found in this story. However, it is the broader journey of youth (from innocence to the end and self-realization) that really brings this book into its own.
The book follows two characters; Goldmund a youth that is sent by his father to a cloister school - for scholarly and spiritual studies, and Narcissus, a young and knowledgeable monk/teacher who becomes friends with the young boy. Goldmund's thirst for life and adventure outside the confined rules of the cloister propels him to leave on an adventure. Narcissus, tries to teach Goldmund wisdom - but lets him leave on this adventure - knowing that the road of life is the only TRUE way to garner wisdom.

The journey that Goldmund takes - its ups and downs, dangerous liaisons, life threatening pursuits, passions, affairs, and curiosity - is the formula of wisdom. It is this experience and knowledge of his journey.

The book does come full circle and feels complete, unlike other "coming of age" type stories. Goldmund's voyage is completed and with that we (as the reader) become enlightened that it is sometimes the journey that is most important - in order to find our self-understanding.

This is almost like a western version of Siddhartha mixed with Catcher in the Rye - that takes place in the medieval times.
I believe it is Hesse's best and most complete work.

While I don't read German, I can only hope that the translation does justice to Hesse. It is very well written.

This book made a huge impression on me in my early 20s and it propelled me to go on my own Voyage. Shortly after reading this - I too left for several long (months) journeys to Central America and South East Asia. Note - I took a copy with me - read it on my travels - I still have the well worn copy.

Now in my 40s - I hope my son, when old enough - reads these books and he too takes that journey of self-discovery.

It's a good book to read aloud to someone

Interesting little tale. I have read it several times over the years. The writing is smooth and the story line keeps you in suspense. It's a good book to read aloud to someone. I call it a tale because the setting and story are not realistic but the writing is so good, the words just seem to flow and you enjoy reading it. I liked the spiritual dimension to it but wish the ending packed more of a punch.

Nero and the Christians

The Christian v. lion's story has been around so long that it has pretty much become a kind of myth. It is a phrase one brings up in order to illustrate some point or other, but is hardly ever thought about in historical terms. In fact, Christianity itself sometimes seems as if it is becoming a kind of myth. The left doesn't take it seriously, and bashes Christians for being intolerant and condescending. But Christians, in their haste to retaliate, often act intolerant and can be arrogantly condescending. The sense of what it means to be Christian seems to get lost in all of this.

Quo Vadis takes us back to the days when Christianity was fresh and new and shows us just what kind of world it was then that caused such a movement to flourish. This alone would make it an excellent novel, but it works wonderfully on all levels. The characters are superbly drawn, the setting is realistic, the plot crackles along, and, perhaps most importantly in a novel with this subject matter, it never becomes preachy or didactic, instead maintaining an objective perspective throughout.

Rome was the greatest of the ancient empires, yet despite all of its glorious achievements, it was truly a barbaric place. The concept of human rights was non-existent. Slaves--of all races--were property, and could be used in any way one saw fit, including the most vicious or depraved. The rule of law, while discussed in philosophical terms, was only sporadically and occasionally applied. The law instead came and went at the whim of the powerful, and if the powerful happened to be someone like Nero--the ruler of Rome during the course of this novel--then the law was sadistic, cruel, wicked and unpredictable.

We see the effect that living this kind of society has on the two main characters of the novel, both of whom are members of the upper crust: Petronius, a courtier; and Vinicius, a military officer. Petronius, as Nero's confidant, can never let his guard down. He must flatter, cajole, deceive and manipulate Nero every minute of the day, for his very life depends on it. It is a life, "drained and listless and detached," as we are told in the first sentence of the novel. Vinicius falls in love with a captive Christian female, and through his love we see how Christianity changes his life. But it is an unbelievably difficult and dangerous undertaking--with the demented presence of Nero and his sycophants looming over everything--to form an attachment with a person and then a cause such as this.

It gradually dawns on us how the Christian movement began in the first place, and why attempts were made so mercilessly to stamp it out. Instead of dishonesty and cruelty, it called for honesty and kindness. Instead of privilege for the elite, its promises were made to all. Instead of arrogance, it preached submissiveness. Perhaps most importantly, it simplified one's life, and allowed one to live without fear.

Rome is burned, possibly at Nero's orders, incredibly, so that he can experience suffering as he believes a true artist must. To divert the anger of the Romans, he blames Christians. Thousands of men, women, and children are rounded up, put in dungeons for months, then on successive festival days were crucified, burned alive, mauled by gladiators, and, as we know, attacked by wild animals. Their fate is so hideous that in time even the jaded Romans became sickened by it.

These historical events, and the actions of the characters during them, are what make up the bulk of the novel. To say the least, it makes for very compelling reading; indeed, some parts are difficult to bear. And as mentioned, it is presented in a very objective way. Not all of the Christians are presented sympathetically--one, in fact, is a fiery, all-will-be-damned type--and not all the Romans are presented harshly. The noblest character in the novel may very well be Petronius, who uses his influence as much as he can to alleviate the suffering he sees around him. And although he recognizes to some degree the power and decency of the movement, he himself does not wish to become a Christian. He can not abide the idea of being required to love his fellow man, most of whom--the unwashed, ignorant mob--he detests. He is a magnificent creation.

The book is a real eye-opener, a good reminder of what the world was like before the birth of Christ, and a sobering reflection on what being a Christian truly means. At the same time it is also a superbly researched and entertaining piece of historical fiction, and the kind of thing for which historical fiction buffs are constantly on the alert. Great stuff.

Best Work from Nobel Prize Winning Author

Shame that this Nobel Prize winning author isn't better known in the English speaking world. Sienkiewicz won the Nobel Prize for his epic writing, Quo Vadis being his best know work. This is a magnificent novel. I love its strong plot, heroism, and visualization of the Roman period. Truly one of the classics of literature. No need to take my word for it, just consider the Nobel Prize committee's enthusiasm.

Kindle 2 formatting is good. No Table of Contents or jogability.

A magnificent work of art

"Quo Vadis" is the kind of novel one simply must include on his shelf. For those who don't believe me, it won the Nobel Prize--and actually deserved it. In my experience, lots of books, although unworthy of receiving even a single positive review, have gotten awards. But the main reason you should read this splendid novel is because of its wonderful storytelling, compelling plot, beautiful imagery, and great characters. To boot, it wasn't very difficult to comprehend, even though it was written more than a century ago. Despite the fact that I cannot understand a shred of Polish, I know that Kuniczak's translation is an absolutely superb one, and that both he and Sienkiewicz are first-rate novelists.

What I particularly loved about "Quo Vadis" was Sienkiewicz's wonderful attention to detail and imagery. His writing style was so lyrical, poetic, and sense-evocative, I could clearly visualize what he was describing, and for the first time ever, I felt like I was actually *seeing* everything: the wild, drunken orgies of Nero's debauched reign, the city of Rome burning, the coliseum packed with rowdy citizens and sweaty gladiators. People enjoy reading books that provide a vivid visual picture of the setting; I know I do. It is also very evident that Sienkiewicz did his homework and researched extensively for this historical novel.

The characters are what drive the plot--and they certainly do that in "Quo Vadis." I found myself liking a few characters and hating several others. And it is interesting, because when I realized that this novel was about Christians in Rome during Nero's time, I had expected Sienkiewicz to have portrayed each Christian as a kindly saint and all the Romans as decadent louts. I was surprised that not every single Roman was depicted as wicked--the honorable Aulus and his gentle wife Pomponia, for example. And not every Christian was a saint in this book, with Crispus, a fervent follower of Christ, seeming to me somewhat intolerant and very narrow-minded at times. Of course, there are some characters who are pure evil; Poppaea, the golden-haired, manipulative wife of Nero, is "evil incarnate," as Sienkiewicz describes in his novel, and (in my opinion) it is difficult for anyone to like Nero.

The core of the plot is a love story between Vinicius, a young Roman tribune, and Ligia, the beautiful Christian girl with whom he falls deeply in love. Vinicius loves Ligia so much--not merely for her beauty, but her virtue and purity--that he actually converts to Christianity, and we see a prodigious transformation in him, from a decadent, pleasure-soaked Roman courtier to a caring and benevolent Christian. Petronius, Vinicius's uncle and another main character, is painted magnificently as well. Although Petronius does not become a Christian like Vinicius, he seems the sublimest character in the novel; he does whatever he can to lessen others' suffering (especially his nephew's) yet still, he cannot bring himself to love everyone--which is exactly what the Christian faith preaches. Petronius is a worldly Roman noble with an eye for beauty and good taste, and he is also the emperor's confidant, called the "arbiter of elegance" at Nero's court. Despite the impact Christianity has upon his life, he cannot love the dirty, recalcitrant mob for which he has such contempt.

"Quo Vadis" has everything you would want in a great novel: a stellar plot, sublime characters, lively dialogue, and graceful prose. It is a truly laudable novel of epic proportions--something to stay on my shelf beside the classics.
