English design and fashion historian Breward constructs an informative history of Western European fashion that draws equally on established scholarship (based primarily on formal developments) and more recent critical theories. Starting with the Middle Ages, each chapter is devoted to a different century and paradigm, from how fashion shaped the body during the 14th century to the impact of consumer culture in this one. The effect is akin to watching one of those time-lapse sequences of flowers blooming, as hemlines rise and fall, corsets squash and squeeze, flounces come and go and colors grow florid and fade while listening to a learned commentary on the social, political and cultural significance of this seemingly arbitrary activity. Indeed, there are many voices, as Breward quotes generously from period documents as well as from contemporary scholars. This is one of the book's strengths, along with its focus on men's fashions and the politics of gender?male homosexuality in particular. Some weaker aspects are the author's prose style, which can be inelegant, and the uneven picture research. When it comes to this century's fashions, the book's English bias also proves problematic. (The current street fashion is summed up by a picture of a bloke in a baseball cap and flight jacket.) Otherwise, this is a solid survey of dress and the issues currently surrounding it?there's much to know about a farthingale.

Three Simple Words - One Click Now.

I was provided withna copy of Three Simple Rules from the author to read and review.

I have literally just flipped the final page on Three Simple Rules and I have never been more desperate to get my hands on the next book, how can a book leave me like that? How can the whole book of been that amazing? How can I put in to words just how incredibly spectacular it is?

The story behind the book is that of Evelyn 'Evie' Russell and Logan Stone. Logan is Evie's boss, department manager at the design company they have both worked at for a handful of years. He is the kind of boss that we all have at some point in our lives, rude, abrupt and scary enough to make you feel physically sick when you know they're going to be in the office for the day. It's a good job he so utterly delectable to make up for it though!

A thousand thoughts went through my head. I would undoubtedly meet his entire family. He’d have wedding duties that would probably have me on my own most of the time. But, dear god, Logan in a tux. “Yeah, I guess I can do that.”

Evie is almost his polar opposite. She's more shy, gentle and thoughtful. She's extremely good at her job as a designer but when she makes a highly expensive mistake, one that could cost her her job, how far will she be willing to go to fix things?

I absolutely adored both Evie and Logan in equal measure. They both had such strong personalities that really came to life and flowed off the pages as you read. I could easily identify with different aspects of their story and at times I was wondering if the book had been based on parts of my own life (I'm not admitting which bits!). It was beyond easy to read this in two sittings as the pages just pulled me in and didn't let go and even though it's quite a fair length I couldn't believe how fast I went from start to finish. It does end on quite a cliffhanger but considering how flawless I found the whole book I had absolutely no anger at being left hanging over the edge, holding on for dear life.

I have no bad points about this book so all I can do is list why it was just so good. From the loveable, identifiable characters, the sex scences hotter than anything I've read to this day, to the fact that there was always such a fine description of all the details that you felt like a third party in their relationship rather than just a reader. I loved the little surprises along the way and how at the end of this first book in the series, you can still see there is so much story to tell and so much more to discover about their pasts and their futures. Even the third party characters made this a joy to read and I'm more often than not have a complete dislike of them in every book. This is the beginning of a beautiful love story with a very naughty streak and one that I absolutely cannot wait to read the continuation of. I highly recommend this book to everyone, you will soon discover a new favourite author when you do give it a go.

TOTAL SENSORY OVERLOAD!!! ONE OF THE HOTTEST STORIES I'VE READ IN A WHILE!!

“I’m not interested in a relationship, but I am interested in you.”

Just… WOW. Talk about total sensory overload! One of the hottest stories I’ve read in a while, with possibly some of the best written sex scenes I have ever come across, this is a book I devoured in every possible way. And loved every delicious moment of it. Steamy, romantic, exhilarating—every twist and turn in this mouthwatering story was delivered just right, penned to perfection, and kept me hypnotized cover to cover. One of my most exciting reads of late, this is exactly the kind of erotic romance I tend to completely lose my mind over because apart from a fresh and interesting storyline, the sex scenes in it never bored me, they never stopped stretching my comfort zone, and I never stopped clinging onto every single word in them. Sometimes repeatedly.

“I was about to become a whore.”

Evelyn Russell loves her job. As a talented young designer at a prominent design agency, she is hungry for success and willing to give her all to achieve it. But when one simple mistake puts all her hard work into jeopardy, Evelyn is forced to sell her body, for one night only, at an exclusive BDSM club, where clients pay thousands of dollars for sex. The only catch is that she is to be blindfolded and bound during the act, as per club’s policy. Apprehensive but desperate, Evelyn is determined to go through with it, even secretly a little aroused by the idea of surrendering all her inhibitions to a man in such a way…but nothing prepares her for that man to be the one who pushed her into that predicament in the first place.

“Someone’s requested a hold be put on you. He’s not a member of the club, and only members have that privilege.”

Evelyn’s ‘buyer’—whom I won’t name so that you are not deprived of the thrill from discovering his identity on your own and at the right moment—is a man accustomed to getting his own way in his professional life, but craving that level of control in his personal life too. Evelyn is everything he hopes to find in a woman, the allure of her courage, willpower and confidence being his ultimate siren call, but he finds himself overwhelmed, both physically as well as emotionally, by the lustful vixen blindfolded before him and the ecstasy he finds in her arms as they consummate their one-night only arrangement.

And so he takes off her blindfold and what follows is a oh-so sexy exploration of sexual tastes and fantasies, with only three simple rules guiding them through it, designed to challenge and explore the very essence of their self-control. As their relationship takes flight, what they eventually find in one another is exactly what they never even dreamed of needing—a person they would be unable to live without, in and out of the bedroom.

“You don’t get to ask questions, no matter what… Rule two is you answer my questions, and you have to answer them honestly… The last rule is your body belongs to me, so that means your orgasms are mine. You don’t come without my permission.”

I rarely enjoy such a relatively low level of angst and drama present in a story, but this story was truly an exception. It was exactly as I needed it to be for the sexual connection between the characters to take centre stage and thus become a crucial component of the evolution of their relationship, without sacrificing the emotional aspect of it all. These characters discover themselves through their sexual connection, and as sizzling as those scenes are between them, there is no doubt in my mind that this is first and foremost a romance, a love story between two people who found their perfect match in each other, and who are willing to put in the work for their relationship to survive.

I loved this book, unexpectedly so, and cannot praise it highly enough for the way it so seamlessly ‘married’ titillating erotica with heart-warming romance, all wrapped up into a flawlessly written, impressive little gem. It was a joy to read and it catapulted me right onto the next book in the series without a second thought.

A scorching hot debut read.

Let me start by saying I loved this book so freaking much it hurts.

The cover and the simple but intriguing blurb grabbed my attention and I’m so glad it did. I may have inhaled this book and it so worth it. I love when a book surprises you and this is exactly what happened with this book. I was expecting just another well written erotica story but what I got was so much more.

I’m not going to give anything away, this is a book you need to read unspoiled so you can enjoy it more. But I will say that it’s a damn scorcher of a book, one that will singe you fingers while reading it.

If you don’t like books with lots of sex in them then this is so not the book for you. This book contains one of the hottest threesome scenes I have ever read. And before you wonder itsM/F/F and its HOT.

This book has more than just hot sex in it, though that plays a big part. It has two characters that you will fall in love with and a storyline that moves along easily and doesn’t drag at all.
Logan and Evie the H/h are now one of my favourite book couples. I loved the dynamic of their relationship. They both held the power, which for such a strong sexual couple was perfect, it couldn’t have been anything less for them. Not with the whole boss/employee thing involved.

When I finished this book, I wanted to go back and start it again immediately, it’s that good. Okay maybe it was five minutes after I finished, because it leaves you with a “what happened last night??????” moment that will leave you desperate for the next book. But that means time for a re-read right?

Don’t hesitate in grabbing this book, it’s already on my top reads for the year. I look forward to more from this author. I have a new keeper author. One I think is going to be big.

About the Author

Gary McGraw, Cigital, Inc.'s CTO, is a world authority on software security. Dr. McGraw is coauthor of five best selling books: Exploiting Software (Addison-Wesley, 2004), Building Secure Software (Addison-Wesley, 2001), Software Fault Injection (Wiley 1998), Securing Java (Wiley, 1999), and Java Security (Wiley, 1996). His new book, Software Security: Building Security In (Addison-Wesley 2006) was released in February 2006. As a consultant, Dr. McGraw provides strategic advice to major software producers and consumers. Dr. McGraw has written over ninety peer-reviewed technical publications and functions as principal investigator on grants from DARPA, National Science Foundation, and NIST's Advanced Technology Program. He serves on Advisory Boards of Authentica, Counterpane, and Fortify Software, as well as advising the CS Department at UC Davis, the CS Department at UVa, and the School of Informatics at Indiana University. Dr. McGraw holds a dual PhD in Cognitive Science and Computer Science from Indiana University and a BA in Philosophy from UVa. A powerful book with deep truths for secure development

I read six books on software security recently, namely "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed" by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc; "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" by Michael Howard, David LeBlanc, and John Viega; "Software Security" by Gary McGraw; "The Security Development Lifecycle" by Michael Howard and Steve Lipner; "High-Assurance Design" by Cliff Berg; and "Security Patterns" by Markus Schumacher, et al. Each book takes a different approach to the software security problem, although the first two focus on coding bugs and flaws; the second two examine development processes; and the last two discuss practices or patterns for improved design and implementation. My favorite of the six is Gary McGraw's, thanks to his clear thinking and logical analysis. The other five are still noteworthy books. All six will contribute to the production of more security software.

Gary McGraw's book gets my vote as the best of the six because it made the biggest impact on the way I look at the software security problem. First, Gary emphasizes the differences between bugs (coding errors) and flaws (deeper architectural problems). He shows that automated code inspection tools can be applied more or less successfully to the first problem set, but human investigation is required to address the second. Gary applauds the diversity of backgrounds found in today's security professionals, but wonders what will happen when this rag-tag bunch (myself included) is eventually replaced by "formally" trained college security graduates.

Second, Gary explains that although tools cannot replace a flaw-finding human, they can assist programmers trying to avoid writing bugs. Gary is the only author I encountered who acknowledged that it is unrealistic to expect a programmer to keep dozens or hundreds of sound coding practices and historical vulnerabilities in his head while writing software. An automated tool is a powerful way to apply secure coding lessons in a repeatable and measurable manner. Gary also reframed the way I look at software penetration testing, by showing in ch 6 that they are best used to discover environmental and configuration problems of software in production.

Third, Gary is not afraid to point out the problems with other interpretations of the software security problem. I almost fell out of my chair when I read his critique on pp 140-7 and p 213 of Microsoft's improper use of terms like "threat" in their so-called "threat model." Gary is absolutely right to say Microsoft is performing "risk analysis," not "threat analysis." (I laughed when I read him describe Microsoft's "Threat Modeling" as "[t]he unfortunately titled book" on p 310.) I examine this issue deeper in my reviews of Microsoft's books. Gary is also correct when he states on p 153 that "security is more like insurance than it is some kind of investment." I bookmarked the section (pp 292, 296-7) where Gary explained how the "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" mix "specific types of errors and vulnerability classes and talk about them all at the same level of abstraction." He's also right that the OWASP Top Ten suffers the same problem. Finally, Gary understands the relationships between operators and developers and the importance of security vocabulary.

I was pleasantly surprised by "Software Security". I reviewed an early draft for Addison-Wesley and wondered where the author was taking this book. It ended up being my favorite software security book, easily complementing Gary's earlier book "Building Secure Software." In my opinion, Gary is thinking properly about all the fundamental issues that matter. This book should be distributed to all Microsoft developers to help them frame the software security problem properly.

A must-have for anyone building networked systems

On the one hand, it is risky for me to praise this book. I make my living teaching and practicing computer security. If everyone writing software these days were to read this book, I might eventually find myself out of business.

Gary McGraw, one of the leading security luminaries int he world, has got it right. Security cannot be added to systems once they are built. It must be designed in from the very beginning. The security posture and design must be considered in every phase of the development of a system - from the early design to the actual coding of the instructions.

Gary has done a fanstastic job explaining how to build secure systems, and detailing the importance and complexity of software security.

I've always been a big fan of Gary's, and with this latest installment in his 3 part series, Gary has provided readers with the most important advice and instruction to help keep the bad guys out of your systems.

Critical reading if you're just getting started

When my company began to investigate software security, we all mistakenly assumed it would be possible to just train the developers what mistakes not to make and all would be well with the world. This book was the first step toward fixing that misunderstanding. Dr. McGraw does an excellent job of describing the environment and the practices that are required when implementing secure coding in the lifecycle. But, he's also managed to prioritize the "touchpoints" so that each can be added in turn to a new development effort rather than requiring any single massive change. Overall an excellent read and good set of guidelines for implementation

About the Author
Hal A. Huggins DDS, MS, the world's most controversial dentist because of his stand on trying to convince dentistry to stop the use of mercury in fillings, has been in practice 42 years in Colorado Springs. He is a leading pioneer in identifying toxic dental materials and balancing body chemistry. Over the past four decades, he developed a multi-disciplined health care model that has been influential in improving autoimmune diseases such as MS, Lupus, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's. Other symptoms such as chronic fatigue, depression, and memory and digestive problems have also responded.

Dr. Huggins earned a post-doctoral Master's with emphasis on immunology and toxicology from the University of Colorado. Controversial in his stand against deception in dental regulations and practices, Dr. Huggins has been on the cutting edge of dentistry since the beginning of his practice. An abbreviated introduction to Melvin Page's work

Hal Huggins DDS was a protege of Melvin Page, a Florida dentist who pioneered the study of endocrine imbalances and ill-health. Huggins has done an extremely good job of summarizing the categories that Page described as "andric" and "gynic," as well as other endocrine imbalances.

In a nutshell, Page and Huggins correctly contend that the estrogens and testosterone and their metabolites exert different levels of effects in different people, and that this affects their personality, matrimonial bliss, and health. By administering miniscule doses of the "imbalanced" hormones, Page and Huggins were able to bring about dramatic results to "seemingly" unrelated illnesses. There are anecdotes, not mentioned in this book, that Page was even - in a few isolated cases - able to reverse cancer.

Page also investigated disequilibria of other endocrine glands, such as the thyroid, the anterior and posterior pituitary, the adrenals, and pancreas. In the 1950s, when Page did his research, his work was truly amazing; today, when doctors can easily run tests to measure individual hormones, it's regrettable that his work has not been expounded on, and developed further.

Both Huggins and Page are quite convincing, and worth reading.

About the Author
Janet E. Gardner, an associate professor of English at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, has published several essays on contemporary drama and pedagogy. She is editor of 12 Plays: A Portable Anthology (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2003).

Beverly Lawn, Professor of English Emeritus at Adelphi University where she taught introductory fiction courses for three decades, has edited several textbooks on fiction and literature, including 40 Short Stories: A Portable Anthology (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 3rd edition 2009).

Jack Ridl, Professor Emeritus of English at Hope College, has published six volumes of poetry; his honors for teaching include the Michigan Teacher of the Year award from the Carnegie Foundation in 1996.

Writing about Literature is the last section

I was very upset that I bought this book along with Reading and Writing About Literature: A Portable Guide....The entire portable guide makes up the last chapter of this book. However, Amazon made it so easy to return the smaller book that I must give their Customer Service a FIVE. For now, this book gets a four....when I'm done reading it, I will consider changing my rating. I like the parts that I've read thus far.

Leading work on a rapidly changing Asia--that includes South Asia

Superb edition by Dr Fingar and his co-contributors. It provides a valuable framework, perspectives from several vantage points, and some historical context to better understand how these two important regions are evolving and spurs thinking about what lies ahead. Well done. I have not seen another work the bridges the expertise of two regions in a remotely comparable way.

Perfect choice for story time or bed time

The Woods has everything I look for when I choose a good read aloud. It has large, vibrant, well defined illustrations with characters that are expressive and who will appeal to kids. It also has a magical read aloud flow and rhythm that just spills easily from the tongue. The timing is perfect with each spread as our young hero discovers all matter of terrifying things in the woods, and then learns they aren't so terrifying after all.

This story brings to mind Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are, thanks primarily to the young boy's blanket cape, trash can helmet and the play sword he wields when he makes his journey to The Woods. I love books that can empower kids to conquer their fears and this is a perfect example. When you add in the pro-sharing message, and what amounts to simply good story telling, you get an excellent choice to help allay any type of bedtime fear.

This one is also the perfect length for group sharing and is going into my permanent story time collection. Don't miss this gem of a story.

A Twist on Bedtime Fears

The beginning of this book conjures up memories of "Where the Wild Thing Are," but quickly changes gears as the main character encounters scares in the forest. With each encounter, he discovers that the scary creatures really have a simple desire (e.g. a night-light, hug, etc...).

The repetition in the book is fun as it enables kids to begin to predict what happens next. It also would be a great story to use with any child struggling with fears at bedtime. Hoppe offers a great model for how to imagine the monster under your bed differently!

Imaginative bedtime read

"The Woods" makes a wonderful bedtime story, especially for little ones who face bedtime fears. A young boy remains awake wondering what happened to his favorite bedtime toy, a stuffed bunny. He embarks on a search and rescue effort, bringing along his handy night-light to keep the monsters at bay. Well, as he walks in the "woods", searching for his bunny, he encounters several characters, who at first seem scary, but upon closer inspection, turn out to be benign.

The full-page color illustrations are delightful to look at and will capture any child's imagination. This makes for a perfect read aloud at bedtime.
