My favorite book of all time. . .

This book I used during my high school days in 95, now a college student, I still refer to this book. Probably my favorite drumming book of all time, it gives you a summary of exercises and patterns of different styles. If you are a intermediate drummer who doesn't know where to start next, get this book and it will open your eyes to new styles you would want to study later on in the future.

EXCELLENT !! One book & video every drummer should own!

This book is one that should be in every drummers library! There isn't one thing that Frank left out of this book. The book starts out with Rudimental Studies and applies them to the kit. This is a great section because, all those rudiments that you learn over the years can finally be applies to the kit in many different ways. From there you get into Linear Patterns and then R&B, Funk & Rock, Blues & Shuffle, World Beats and Odd Meters. All those sections will keep you all busy for quite a while. Make sure you make these grooves your own... play them until they are part of your library. The section I found fun and challenging is Over The Bar. This section has playing 3/16 in 4/4 time, 5/16 in 4/4 time and many others. I found that you could play some of these things over an ostinato, then move them around the kit... you can come up with some real cool ideas. Then there is the Play-Along Tape & Drum Charts, Appendix and the ever important Glossary. Make sure you get your copy as soon as possible, cause' this will take you to places you have never been before! Don't forget to get the video. This companion tape shows Frank's versatility as a drummer. WOW .... what a great drummer & author!!

The "Complete Modern Drumset" is EXCELLENT!!!

The "Complete Modern Drumset" has taken my drumming to whole new level! Frank's presentation of the material is very thorough! He covers the basic rudiments, linear patterns, odd time signatures, how to play over the bar, polyrhythms, etc. He also teaches about different kinds of music like Jazz, Jazz Funk, Blues, and Rock, as well as a study of rhythms from other cultures like Afro Funk, the Nanigo, Bossa Nova, and many others.The video and CD contain musical samples and full length songs to show you how to apply them. Frank is an amazing drummer !!! I highly recommend this to anyone who really wants to expand their drumming vocabulary!!!! Shaad Madison

apparently great book. edition plagued with errors ( probably hundreds or thousands ).

I received this long awaited for book two days ago by postal mail. I bought it at RSNA2010 in December. There, I leafed through it and found it very interested for the radiologist interested in head and neck radiology. It looked very practical, and yet, given its volume, very comprehensive. The authors , I consider, are a warranty of quality and reliance. As compared to P. Som's textbook, the bible in head and neck imaging, it seemed a different, attractive alternative.
Well, after much waiting, I got the book home by postal mail, and after a quick look at a couple chapters, I started finding lots of errors , mainly in the picutures; there are many incorrect labels, arroneous arrows; some texts do not match the images they are supposed to describe; footnotes for images that do not exist, frequent misspellings, erroneously labeled anatomic structures.......
And I am talking about a 90 minute reading of a couple chapters ( among several hundreds of them ) the first day.
I am sure this is a great book, but, until the company does not correct these problems with a new print or edition, nobody shuold buy it. I can not assure there are other copies running around without these problems, but I doubt it is so, the book is so recent. I find it useless the way it is, unless I was so lucky to find all the mistakes in the book during the first hour I looked at it!!!!!!!
In fact, when I accessed the book's web, where you can navigate it, it was closed until Januar 15th. They are probably trying to fix the mess.
For those who already have purchased it, there is a page at wolters klubber/ lippincot williams, where errors can be reported. I am sure they will refund us the money, or send a new copy when everything is corrected.
Pity that this happened to such an apparently great text!!!!

Very helpful book

This is a very helpful book for those that are confronted with difficult head and neck imaging cases. The text is practically oriented and the illustrations are excellent. The book is written from a clinical point of view, providing relevant information.
I'm happy I purchased this book - I already consulted it several times.
Hopefully an update will be published soon.

Maithree Wickramasinghe received her PhD from the Institute of Education, University of London. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. Definitely worth having if you want to live as a Maliki

This is a book worth having, though its description on this page does little enough to commend it. Its author is Shaykh Ali Laraki, a contemporary scholar of traditional Islam who seems blessedly free of Wahhabi or Salafist delusions and who is amenable to tasawwuf. There is an Arabic text of Ibn Ashir's Murshid al-Mu'in that is readable and vowelled. It's not always totally clear which parts of the book are matn and which commentary, but overall this is useable by a person wishing to make a rigorous effort to live as a Maliki. It has three sections, the first on aqida, the second fish, and the third a very rudimentary treatment of tasawwuf. The English is quite good.

Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics presents a comprehensive grounding in the clinical skills needed in a biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy. Author Franklyn Sills places particular emphasis on developing what he terms "perceptual skills," diagnostic skills that enable the practitioner to perceive the subtle sensations and intuitive insights that are the groundwork of most forms of holistic somatic therapy.

The biodynamic approach has its origins in the clinical exploration of W. G. Sutherland, DO, (1873-1954), the founder of osteopathy in the cranial field and "forefather of craniosacral therapy." In the last ten years of his life, his work changed from a biomechanical approach to a fully holistic orientation toward the ordering and enlivening forces present in the human system. Sutherland described his experiences of a mysterious presence, the "Breath of Life," from which ordering forces and healing intentions arose. His work then shifted from biomechanics to biodynamics; from analysis and motion-testing to an appreciation of the unfolding of the "inherent treatment plan." Sutherland encouraged practitioners to use no outside force whatsoever, but to allow the inherent ordering forces, which he called "potency," to make the decisions and do the work.

Franklyn Sills pioneered the biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy outside the osteopathic profession. This approach has now spread around the world in various forms. Sills wrote the early books in this field, and this new book now brings the text up to date. Foundations in Craniosacral Therapy, Volume Two expands on the work described in the previous volume, starting with an overview of a biodynamic approach to craniosacral therapy, which emphasizes the suspensory nature of the human system. Here we review and deepen our understanding of the "three bodies"—the physical, fluid, and tidal bodies. We also review and expand upon the suspensory nature of the holistic shift—the physical body suspended in the fluid body, in turn suspended in the tidal body—within the context of the inherent treatment plan.

The following chapters of the book orient to our earliest life experiences—the embryonic period and the pre- and perinatal experience—with chapters devoted to birth, birth dynamics, and craniosacral approaches oriented both to birth trauma and to the tissue patterns it generates. Here we orient to the prenate and birthing infant as a sentient being having and responding to life experience. Further chapters orient to the primal/notochord midline and the tissue structures that form around it. We explore the dynamics of the pelvis, vertebral axis, cranial base, face and hard palate. Volume Two finishes with four important chapters on the neurophysiology of stress and trauma and related craniosacral and verbal skills. All chapters include appropriate biodynamic approaches to traumatization and CNS activation.

Franklyn Sills is the co-director of the Karuna Institute, a teaching center offering trainings in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. Detailed, complex but ultimately rewarding

Ian Tattersall's _The Fossil Trail_ traces the evolution of scientific undestanding of human origins in exquisite detail and in a language that is understandable to the lay reader. The book is rich with scale diagrams of the fossil record of early hominids, presenting the various theories of human evolution from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

Because of the subject matter and the aim of the book, it is dense reading, and it clearly is not for everyone. Nonetheless it is a fascinating and rewarding book.

Fossilized Writing

How do you read a book for pleasure when the author is constantly stopping you from advancing by using one word parenthetical expressions? The answer is that you can't. This tome by Tattersall is in dire need of a good editing. It should be a warning for all those who would read scientific books; when the credits do not contain an "edited by" recognition, be wary.
Don't get me wrong, Tattersall tackles an incredibly difficult topic and does a great job with the chronology and with the scientific facts. The problem is that his prose and grammar are so dreadful that the book is painfully difficult to read. Tattersall is constantly badgering the reader with silly, needless one word parenthetic expressions.
Moreover, then, of course, indeed, you could choose to ignore these, well, annoying little pauses. And, therefore, you might, remakably, gain some knowledge and, well, insight into a, mostly, difficult subject. But, the fact that the book is so, well, scientifically informative, well, mostly.
ENOUGH ALREADY!! Buy a red pencil and use it. A copy editor at a weekly local newspaper could have edited this book on short notice and made it a five star candidate in about two hours. Why no editor? I have no idea. I am surprised that Oxford Press would print a book with such glaring grammatical nonsense. The problem is that scientists think that their peers will forgive their literary gobbledygook if the topic has innate merit and the scientist has authority in the subject.
My recommendation is to pass on this book. There are many other books that will give you the same information less painfully.

Wrong title

I think this should have been called "How We CAME to Know What We Think We Know About Human Evolution". It is more of a history of discoveries than discussion on conclusions based on those discoveries.
This is my first read in paleoanthropology and I found it a bit difficult. In some cases, discussion on historical hypothesis were glossed over where I felt they could have been elaborated. Although Tattersall comes across as intelligent, I found it to be a slow read due to both vocabulary and flow. Overall, not recommended as a pleasure read.

Lambert Deckers is a professor of psychological science at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He teaches courses mainly in motivation & emotion, psychology of learning, and history and systems of psychology. Professor Deckers is a charter member of the Association for Psychological Science and has conducted research in the psychology of humor in the United States and Germany.

Product Review for Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental (4th Edition)

This is a textbook for a Motivational Psychology course I am enrolled in. The textbook is decent and has been recently updated. I have noticed a few spelling and grammar errors that were likely due to spell check being utilized instead of a human editor. Some of the studies are a bit dated, and due to that, new research is emerging now that contradicts some of the material in the textbook, but this is fairly normal due to the nature of the discipline. In some of the chapters, the author can be long winded, especially in instances where he breaks down a topic and presents several studies that suggest the same information. Overall though, it is a well-written and easy to understand book with lots of empirical research to back up topics. The subject is rather interesting as well, which helps to keep the reader engaged. I would suggest this text to educators or students who need resources or background information.

This is possibly the more boring psych book I've ever used. The chapters go on for way too long and it drags out the material.
Yes, the material is useful, it's just presented as dry as possible.
I was excited about this book since I'm interested in the class it's for (in my case, a 300 level psychology course on Motivation) but this book really kills.

If it was less expensive I would actually keep this book as a reference guide. I need it for a class and it is costly even to rent. Definitely unnecessary in todays digital error to pay lots of money for a book when the course is $1300.00

About the Author
James H. Overfield received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is Professor and Chair of History at the University of Vermont. In 1999 he received the University's outstanding teaching award. His publications include HUMANISM AND SCHOLASTICISM IN LATE MEDIEVAL GERMANY (Princeton University Press, 1984), as well as numerous articles published in such journals as Societas and Studies in Medieval and Renaissance History. He is also the author of SOURCES OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY GLOBAL HISTORY, published by Houghton Mifflin (2002).

The covers of this textbook are a little beat up, but it's not too much of a problem for me, especially considering the fact that it's used. This book is still very usable and came at a relatively low price, so I'd say that it's definitely a good value. If you need this textbook, this is the place to buy it.

Arrived on time however the textbook that I received was very used. The previous owner basically colored every page with highlighter. I would order a less used book less time and maybe pay a little more because it is very distracting to read because it is so colored and drawn on.

Has highlighted sides of the book which makes it look a lot older than it should be.
