This book is a really good intro to hybrids and EVs. It covers a broad spectrum of EV controls topics and is written in a way that is accessible to (most) everyone. Some books on EVs are very high level and probably meant for business types. The others are super theoretical and spend most of the book on motor control. This book hits the sweet spot. Also, it has lots of examples with numbers. Everyone loves realistic examples.

a disappointing read

I was very diappointed in this book. Having read the reviews I looked forward to receiving it but in fact I thought it no better than generic dog book descriptions of the havanese breed. So many of these books, like 'Puppies for dummies' for instance, just repeat the same old stuff. I really wanted to know more about choosing and raising a havanese puppy, but it was of little use as its main focus seemed to be for potential breeders. There was very little about health problems, temperament or behaviour. In fact the book's layout and presentation looks 20 years old and I have already given my copy away to a thrift shop.

Good for under $10

This is a good inexpensive book to get you started. I breed Havanese and I purchased several copies of this book for under $10, including shipping, as a gift for the new puppy owners. The book is a quick and easy read and it explains the history, characteristics, and standards for the breed. It explains what you need to know about adopting and caring for a puppy. I highly recommend this book for any new Havanese owner or if you are considering a Havanese. Again, this is an inexpensive book, it retails for $14.95 and you should find it cheaper on the internet.

A must for anyone interested in NRs and their origin

This is the seminal publication on nursery rhymes, IMO. The Opies have been collecting information about nursery rhymes for more than 50 years. The second edition of their OD of NR was published last year (1997) and is greatly updated on the first. It includes indepth analysis of over 550 nursery rhymes. I've been unable to find a NS of my knowledge that isn't included in there.
It makes a great present for a new-born, or his/her parents more like!

Getting dated.

This is the second edition, published in 1997, of the original Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes, also by Iona and Peter Opie, which appeared in 1951. The Preface to the Second Edition explains that the authors gathered many new references over the intervening four decades, and thanks several correspondents for still further additions and corrections. There is, consequently, much more information in the apparatus of the newer edition. However, the revisions are not thorough enough; I still get the sense that I am reading a book put together in the years after World War II.
For one thing, the Introduction appears to have been completely untouched; there are no references to any publication after 1951 (with the exception of references to two recent compilations by the Opies), and most date from the 1940's (for example, the reference on p. 3 to "two admirable Presidential Addresses by Lord Raglan to the Folk-Lore Society, 20 Mar. 1946, and 5 Mar. 1947"). Moreover, the discussion evinces a strange English elitism that may have seemed conventional six decades ago, but has not worn well with time. For example, the Opies seem to consider it a great fillip to the status of nursery rhymes that some of them can be shown to have been written by respected members of the English upper class; but we would consider these figures second or third-rate authors today (for example, Sir Charles Sedley). Also, there is too much blue-blooded in-group banter; for example, under "Bo Peep," one finds this assertion: "it is on record that in his early days Irving played the part of the wolf in Little Bo-Peep at Edinburgh." OK, who is Irving? If you want your book to be read by the generations that succeed you, you must not make allusions that are comprehensible only to your peers and coevals.
Finally, the book is unnecessarily difficult to use. I STILL cannot find "Pop Goes the Weasel" in here; either I am an idiot or the indices are inadequate. I think the latter.

What an amazing book! As a Christian

What an amazing book! As a Christian, I wanted to develop in my personal walk with God and understand the mysteries in order to grow in my spiritual walk. I began reading several books to understand Faith, Prayer, Believing, but I still needed a deeper more intimate relationship with God. I understood prayer was the key, and faith unlocks the door. So I set out on a private journey in search of a deeper understanding of prayer, how to pray, how to get answers thereby making true connection with God by means of effective fervent prayer. Catherine Ponder's book is the answer - a divinely inspired writing from God. She gives clarity, understanding, and methods on how to pray, many affirmations to use for God to open the channels for answers and she writes many stories from people's experiences. Some of those stories I can relate to in my personal journey. This is a meaningful book that everyone should have and READ, and practice the methods of prayers! Once you begin to read, you will not want to stop reading. It's the best book I have read yet.

The Dynamic Laws of Prayer by Catherine Ponder is a book that includes among the following; Relaxing as the First Step in Prayer, relaxing your emotions, the lesson of evil, using the no power to transform challenges, a person who got overseas housing even when many other people were also trying to get housing (I’m guessing pertaining to a U.S. federal government worker), using the power of release for human relations challenges (for either personal or professional situations), and more. A person must keep an open mind because of the information contained on physical health situation and body weight conditions.

In a journalist's entertaining engagement with strange believers, science is a major casualty.

This is a book about unreliable observers written by an unreliable observer. The author states that “most humans, not least myself, are an incoherent mess of madness and sanity.” While the self-acknowledged irrationality of the investigator of irrationality makes for dramatic situations that the author skillfully weaves into his story, it also leads to confusion in the author’s search for truth. Storr openly confesses his strong sympathy for the eccentrics he interviews, and demonstrates a painful (if often entertaining) difficulty in confronting and conclusively reporting the errors in their positions, whether they be from an advocate of creationism or a proponent of the moral innocence of Adolph Hitler. In contrast to his emotional attraction to the irrationalists he interviews, Storr also exhibits an open hostility to debunkers of irrational beliefs. He strangely includes among his subjects one such person, James Randi, and his interview with him is the only antagonistic one in the book. While Storr is often good at identifying irrational bias and its sources, he is not so good at separating the belief from the believer: Randi’s motivations for his investigations may (or may not) be irrational ones, but they do not determine the truth or falsity of his conclusions.

A corollary of Storr’s personal attraction to strange believers is his failure (or lack of desire) to grasp the essentials of the scientific method. He frequently ignores large bodies of data and well-confirmed theory that demonstrate the falsity of the positions of his irrational subjects. For example, in his discussion of homeopathy he never cites the basic dose-response phenomenon universally observed in medical science, nor does he even hint at the existence of a massive body of high-quality, strong scientific evidence that ESP phenomena do not exist. He refers to “scientific dogma” as if scientific claims against various irrational beliefs are as dogmatic as the irrational claims themselves; thus all claims, in the author’s emotional view, seem pretty much the same at heart, and Randi is as wacky as is the man who claims that he communicates by mental telepathy with his terrier. But most damaging for his analyses, Mr. Storr shows no appreciation for the cumulative effect of the scientific process, how science works through the accretion of the results of hypothesis testing by scientists who examine each other’s work and either confirm or falsify existing claims, leading to a net result that is independent of individual emotion and bias.

On the positive side, Storr’s account of the origin and nature of human irrationality is revealing, clear and convincing. His writing is effective and often highly evocative. And perhaps most usefully, his highly personal and confessedly muddled account of muddled thinkers invites the reader to reflect on the reader's own biases and on the virtues (and difficulty) of achieving modesty and balance in striving after truth.

It Grew on Me

This book is subtitled Adventures With the Enemies of Science and so I expected it to be a hard-hitting book debunking the ideas of psuedoescience and the extreme fringe. That is not at all what it turned out to be and at first I felt the author was much too sympathetic with the "unpersuadables". But as I continued reading through the book I found myself appreciating the author's perspective more and more and his approach which refuses to demonize the "enemies of science".

This book provides the reader with a view of what the unpersuadables are like that at times is exasperating and at other times is fairly sympathetic. In the end one is left with the conclusion that they are our fellow human beings and are often just as sincere if not more so in their beliefs than the skeptics are.

The stories in this book are entertaining and I think they are worth considering. We do not have to demonize one another just because we disagree whether the positions one holds or disputes are mainstream or on the fringes.
