Written as though the film treatment were already completed, Schaap's chronicle of Jesse Owens's journey to and glorious triumph at the 1936 Berlin Olympics is snappy and dramatic, with an eye for the rousing climax, through curiously slight on follow-through. Starting with Owens as the well-feted ex-athlete in the 1950s, Schaap (an ESPN anchor and author of Cinderella Man) flashes back to Owens's childhood in 1920s Cleveland, where junior high coach Charles Riley spotted his astounding physique and near limitless potential for track and field. Owens seems so perfectly made for running and jumping that the following years of ever-increasing athletic and popular success are less exciting than preordained. By the time the "Ebony Antelope" (as one of many adoring newspapermen had anointed him) was ready for Berlin, his success was practically guaranteed. The real drama of Schaap's book, which surprisingly skimps on Owens the person, comes in the politically fractious runup to Berlin (for the ceremony-obsessed Hitler, "a fascist fantasy come true"). While the story has been told many times, Schaap makes good use of his prodigious research and access to the Owens family, even digging up the fact that Owens's oft-repeated claim he was snubbed by Hitler and the Berlin crowd was very likely untrue. He has also appeared on ABC's World News Tonight and the CBS Evening News. He is the son of the award-winning journalist Dick Schaap.

Excellent book on Jesse Owens

The accomplishments of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Summer Olympics is still revered and celebrated now, eighty years later. Not just for the athletic achievement of earning four gold medals, but also for dispelling the myth of Adolf Hitler’s notion of Aryan superiority is this feat remembered. In this excellent book by Jeremy Schapp, the reader will learn more about what made a humble black man from Ohio turn into the fastest man on Earth.

There are many aspects about Owen’s story that Schapp writes about beyond the wins on the track. From the coaching of Larry Snyder at Ohio State to the story about how Owens became one of the members of the 4 x 100-yard relay team to the alleged “snub” by Hitler after Owns won his first medal, there are many different subplots that are recalled in great detail. The story of the “snub” is very interesting in that the myth is dispelled by Owens himself by recalling that Hitler waved at him after his first medal. It was only later during the lecture circuit did the story of the snub become well known.

Not everything written is about Owens, either. Schapp wrote very good pieces about filmmaker Leni Reifenstahl, the American boycott of the games that almost happened and the controversy about leaving the two American Jewish runners off of the relay team in which Owens replaced one of them and won his fourth medal. Avery Brundage is also prominently portrayed in the book. These and other aspects of the 1936 Olympics make the book complete and an excellent source of information on this topic.

The only thing that could have made this better would have been a little more coverage of life after the Olympics for Owens as the book does not make it clear what really became of Owens after that historic event. But if the reader wants to learn about the Jesse Owens story of how he became a person who singlehandedly dispelled a dictator’s vision of domination through the simple acts of running and jumping, then this is the book to read.

This book was very well written and showed many of the challenges we face daily in our lives, but it is amazing that someone saw his talent, gave up many hours to help him develop it to be the amazing athlete that Jesse become. I feel credit must be given to his parents and a loving wife who basically gave up hours, then years while his abilities were being developed.

I love the way he desired to have schooling and care for his small family. So many sacrifices were made in his life and then you think of of the mental anguish of the prejudice against his race, this was a time when people did not respect a person for their talents, abilities and kindness.There were others in our society who were disregarded because of birth defects who did not have a fair chance in life.

Jesse Owens and his coach were heroes for being able to overcome and give it all they had to develop the talents and opportunities for him to find a place on the Olympic team for the USA. Then to arrive and find the social beliefs of Hitler were even worse, but he endured and gave his all. I was touched by the friendship he developed with the Luz Long which endured for years after the Olympics. This book is well worth reading because of the basic values it teaches, that many of us have seen in our own lives in a different manor.

A fascinating story and tribute to one of America's legendary athletes.

If you are interested in learning about the behind the scenes happenings when Jesse Owens won four gold medals in front of a stunned Adolph Hitler then read this book. The book is about Jesse and the things that happened to him on the way to being the world's fastest human. It is a well written account. My view is it should be required reading in all public schools as the events described in this book are so much a part of history. Perhaps the most astonishing thing in the book is to learn about how Jesse Owens was discriminated against when he returned from the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He attended Ohio State and could not stay in the dorms on campus and eat in many restaurants in the area. In those he could find meals he often had to go in the back door and dine away from white people. What a way to treat one of America's most famous athletes. Norman Jones, Ed. Invisible Planets: fortunately these gems have not been invisble for some time now. All of the collected stories have been published (in translation) before in well known periodicals. Now they are one piece. Don’t know, what is to be expected? That’s because this is Sense of Wonder!
For a long time undisclosed to the english speaking readership, there has been a whole world of SF in China, which Ken Liu (The Grace of Kings), translator of all the stories in this book, finally reveals. Want to know what happened in the Year of the Rat, or how to fold a city like Beijing? Take this up and be astounded.
Yet what Liu claims in his foreword to the edition is, that this is not about what makes these SF stories chinese, but what about these chinese stories is worth to be known to non-chinese speaking SF-readers, and the answer is: all of it.
Stories by: Chen Qiufan, Xia Jia, Ma Boyong, Hao Jingfang, Tang Fei, Cheng Jingbo, and, last but not least, the much lauded Cixin Liu (The Three-Body-Problem).
What IS to be expected is the full range of fiction, from the social approach to science and future, up to Hard SF. Also additional nonfiction (namely three essays), which makes this all the more a milestone in global SF history.
And about the hard work, Ken Liu put into this? As they say: it takes a master to translate masters. Liu is a master, quod erat demonstrandum.

Fantastic anthology exposes readers to the greats of Chinese SF

Invisible Planets is an incredible collection of science fiction stories from mainland China. Each of the stories is a gem, multifaceted, beautiful and utterly unique. What you perceive depends on the angle from which you look at it. So many wondrous places and amazing characters. What all of the stories have in common is their ability to enthrall the reader and excite the imagination.

If you enjoy short science fiction, this is an anthology that you must add to your collection. You won't be disappointed by the quality and the variety of the pieces included. The opportunity to explore the perceptions of writers long unavailable to the English speaking public is an added bonus.

Appeals to all ages

You certainly can't beat the price for this book, and I found that it appeals to all ages. Though it is written for 9-12 year olds, my 5 year old daughter absolutely loves it. As an adult, I was very intrigued by the stories in the book, and it was a great launching point for me to do some of my own research into this fascinating area. I will recommend not only this book, but this author, to everyone I know.

Dull

Karis is an immortal princess from another dimension where everyone has amazing powers. She is banished to an island on Earth after she is framed for a crime. On this island, after several decades, she meets Brady. Brady thinks he is just an underground fighter, but he’s actually another immortal being from the same dimension as Karis. When they find their way back home, they become embroiled in a battle to reclaim Karis’ throne (oh yeah, she’s a princess) and begin discovering all their amazing powers (as well as receive gifts of still more powers). This actually made the book pretty dull. They spend so much time talking about their powers and practicing their powers that the actual plot of the book becomes more of an after-thought. And the fact that they seem to be the best at everything robs the book of tension. The romance between Karis and Brady feels tepid – I never really believed their feelings for each other were genuine. Readers never develop enough of a connection to their homeworld to really care who ends up running things – which is a good thing, as the book ends abruptly without providing resolution.

a valiant and attractive attempt at the impossible

What architect or architectural student has not dreamed of writing his or her own quick-reference book? How many of us carry around notebooks crammed with precious bits of information, hard won from years of experience, both good and bad? This book is an excellent attempt to formalize the most important and useful of that information. It's an attractive book printed in four tones with the occasional full-color spread and a "travel guide" feel. I wouldn't call it "pocketable" unless your pockets can accommodate an iPad Mini, but it will ride along very comfortably in a pack or messenger bag.

The author acknowledges the immense quantity of information architects must be prepared to wield on a daily basis. Any attempt at abridgment will invariably leave out some critical piece of information or another. This particular abridgment appears to be best suited to students of architecture, young practitioners, and related professionals such as real estate agents, facilities managers, and the like. While each section contains valuable information architects with more experience will quickly move from this book to the full resources, many of which are identified in the "compendium" section of this book (though strangely the book references old versions of some of these resources).

The inclusion of several pages devoted to hand-drafting implements and methodologies, and the omission of any mention of Building Information Modeling whatsoever is perplexing, particularly for a book published in 2013, but perhaps somewhat understandable given the author's professional academic background. Still, if the author intends to argue that software are tools and that tools should be taught on the job why devote an entire chapter to AutoCAD?

In the end, I'm keeping this book as a really decent resource, but I think such abridgments would be more successful if they were tailored to particular real-life job descriptions (i.e. student, job captain, project architect, etc.).

Really, really useful.

I keep this in my desk, bag, or wherever I'm working. It saves me so much time. There have been several times I with it had more in it, but then it wouldn't be so small and hence portable, present, useful... 90% of the time I'm able to flip right to it. Time will probably come when I have many of these basic answers and standards memorized, but right now It's simply a lifesaver. It won't replace a larger book of standards, but it will save you a bunch of time and effort you would normally spend pulling a big book down and navigating a bloated index. It took me a bit to find this book, because it is the updated version of "Materials, Structures, Standards" by the same author. It's been slightly re-arranged and retitled. I'd expect the re-arranging for a new edition, but not a completely new title. I had to email the author and ask her if she was going to publish a new edition since the old ones are sold out. She pointed me in the right direction and I'm glad she did.

Overall, I'm really pleased. It won't replace a more comprehensive work - it isn't meant to - but it will cover the bulk of the quick questions you should know the answers to by now but don't. Or maybe you can just hand it to your colleague that keeps pestering you with questions like, "how much clearance do I need..." and say "here, buy a copy of this book."

It is the "Cliff Notes" version presenting the "tip of the iceberg " essentials of topics that will require deeper study.
A good starting point, and valuable for that purpose.

The achievements were ranked based on difficulty, importance, and degree of success. Through a series of twenty vignettes, he paints a vivid picture of the most intense government efforts to improve the quality of life both at home and abroad—from enhancing health care and workplace safety, to expanding home ownership, to improving education, to protecting endangered species, to strengthening the national defense. About the Author

Paul C. Light is the Paulette Goddard Professor of Public Service at New York University. He is also Douglas Dillon Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, where he founded the Center for Public Service. Light is the author of numerous books on public service and management, among them Pathways to Nonprofit Excellence (2002), Government's Greatest Achievements (2002), Making Nonprofits Work (2000), and The New Public Service (1999).

Many readers will feel that the author attacks Libertarianism without clearly mentioning it, often claiming for coercive government the voluntary achievements of private persons or Libertarians. This seems to be a growing trend. From the above review of things coercive 'Big Government' achieved:

After fanatics for big-governments wrecked it? Most work was done by private individuals, many of the coerced government programs backfired

No. The March of Dimes voluntary campaign of contributions cleared the path for the vaccine and public awareness, itself a private invention. Over-quick vaccination efforts of the government produced backfiring vaccines.

No. Libertarians on the ground led the peaceful fall of Communism--hey wait, isn't Communism an example of wonderful big government bringing us to a 'stateless society'? Yeltsin, Zhang, Vaclav Klaus and the leader of the Mongolian anti-communist revolt were all proud L/libertarians.

Love Cats? Will Love this!

I got this book for my little girl (8) who loves cats. She read the first book, and wanted the other two. This one was not a disappointment. She giggled and smiled the whole time she was reading it. Now, she wants the last one in the series. The books are written very well.
